I think it is a very good idea. Have thought of something similiar, only in Mexico. Great weather, low cost of living. Keep working on the idea.

Dis Housing

I'm sure I would be as active in a small dis environment as I am now. In most cases it is not the enviornment that isolates a person, it's the person who makes a decisioin to isolate. I do agree that my idea of a renovated accessible motel/hotel would not be best for children who need a green space to run and play. For empty nesters a condo-like setting would free up more time for outside activities such as sports, travel, volunteerism, etc.

Where are the lots? Last good ones I saw were near Pensacola and very expensive.

My neighborhood is rapidly going gray as we're in one of the few areas with one story homes and lots of services near by. Many empty nesters hate vacumning and climbing stairs. This place was reasonably easy to make accessible quickly although 16 years later we're still working on things because they were built on slabs in the early 1970's. We alos have a few couples with small children because an elementary and high school are in walking distance. Add a single woman who likes the closeness of the neighbors and yes, at least 3 homes with a wheelchair or scooter user. Once these homes, even the ones with original siding, are up for sale they go before they hit the papers because people have a standing request with a realtor.

Yes, even with no Kids I want a yard and trails to walk my dog. An accessible ramp to the water would be a big feature..

I was driving around the other day and saw a small development that was improved but not built on. It is a small court with about 8 lots. I told my wife it would be interesting if it had all SCI related homeowners. Think of the advantages. Here are a few off the top of my head.
  1. The understanding support of all your neighbors.
  2. Visiting your neighbors would not be a problem.
  3. Services could be combined to save money. (lawn care, pool care, home cleaning, etc..)
  4. If your vehicle breaks down, I'm sure a neighbor could help out with a ride.
  5. Quadriplegics in Florida pay no real estate taxes.
  6. The police and fire company could have us on alert.
  7. Block parties!
  8. 5 minutes to the Gulf of Mexico.
  9. Wheelchair broke? I'm sure a neighbor will have one to lend you.
  10. etc..........
I built custom homes for 10 years from my chair up north. I'm retired now enjoying the warmth of Palm Harbor, FL. For a project like this I would build again for me and anyone else interested. I just thought this would be a cool idea. There's nothing better than a home made with the changes you need.

I'd love to know what everone thinks.
Sounds like a great idea to me. I think it's something that is long over due.
I would jump at the chance if there was a community like it available to live in. I think it would be great to have neighbors that I have something in common with. That would be great for me in my coming old age.
