Question Life on "The Pale Blue Dot"

Just thought I'd share this link:

http://www.pangeaday.org/filmDetail.php?id=75

All things considered ... It is clear why life is extremely fragile & awesome, although remarkably hard, on "The Pale Blue Dot"!

Welcome to CC DeeLove.

I agree that it's clear ...remarkably hard...etc. I don't see how either viewing the earth from space or the film makes the situation at all clear, though.

Maybe you could go into some detail about your view(s) on this?

Well, to elaborate … “All things considered” is the quantifying phrase to my statement.

If you consider and as stated in the film, that there is no evidence of any other planet in the universe like our “Pale Blue Dot” – a planet that can sustain all life as we know it. Than is it is sort of unfathomable to understand how we have all come to be. How insignificant we really are! How fragile everything we depend on really is! How amazing and awesome life and our natural world are! How random it all is! And seeing our lil’ blue speck in relation to the vast solar system/universe, it becomes clearer to me - why all life as we know it can be so remarkably hard, fragile and amazingly wonderful!!!

Yada yada yada … Just some FFT.

OK. Well, there's other considerations/perspectives. Life, as far as we know, is very rare in the universe - but all the diverse life on our planet/home (some thirty or more million species) has evolved over a period exceeding three billion years, hence the appearance of fragility may be illusory since the species making up our biosphere developed in tandem with ambient/earth environment. From this perspective the existence of life on the pale blue dot may be viewed as quite stable and secure. I agree, however, that it is not.

Something new has been injected into the equation about a century ago and that something has a monstrous nature of exploitative-ness - and that something has evolved and grown unchecked to the point that it is now threatening to so corrupt the nature of all life support systems on earth that much of life will cease to be within a relatively short time.

I dunno, what is "all that crap"?

BTW, that was a sorta crude entry into this dialogue.

What is so clear from the photo of earth at night is where resources are being used, and where there is little electricity. With the exception of Johannesburg, most of Africa is in the dark.
kenf, even Bush finally said that global warming is real (took long enough) so what is it that Al Gore is saying other than the frightening truth?

there is no global warming going on. the earth changes everyday, has since it's been here. gore travels in a private jet , then gets in a huge limo to take him where he is going. makes tons of cash for his speaches. his house burns tons of fosil fuels. "do as i say , not as i do". open your eyes to this idiot.
