Able to pee
Does anyone pee by straining? If so, how long have u been doing it, and how many times a day? The reason I'm asking is because I'm able to pee by straining, not heavy just very light when I'm full. I notice that when I have more urine than it's easier for me to pee. And I'm able to do this say 3 months after the accident so it's been about a year and a half now. My concern is that does it do damage to the kidney if I continue, I know that it is better to cath but uti sucks. Don't get me wrong I can pee pretty much all of it. I do a test and have under 50cc left in the bag, and still cath in the morning and at night. I drink alot of water during the day time so I go about 3 times during the day. I don't know I'm just scare and hate doctors. ANy input. Thanks..................

Hi htrn,
What you are describing is called "reflex" voiding and can be the cause of kidney damage. I would not recommend it. If you are getting more than 400-500cc with each cath, then you need to increase your cathing to more often than twice daily. Hi Htran,
If it weren't for the potential (perhaps even probable) danger to the kidneys associated with the high pressures of reflex voiding it would be a good thing. Flushing the bacteria out of the bottom of your bladder and bladder neck and especially your urethra before catheterizing is desirable. Always pushing a catheter into the meatus, urethra and bladder will no doubt introduce more bacteria into your bladder without voiding outward first. I was taught way back in 1979 the "tap and crede" (pronounced kre-day) method before catheterizng. Alternating between tapping on your bladder area and a "light" pushing on it to help stimulate the bladder into contracting to initiate some natural (outward) voiding. The theory being as I described above, to help flush the bacteria out before pushing a catheter (thus bacteria) in. It's not intended to replace catheterizing, just to help flush the bladder/urethra/meatus out a little bit and hopefully preventing the incidence of UTIs or additional colonization. Quote:

I have been reflex voiding for 17 years. When I have been cathed to see what has remained, it is usually 30 cc's or less. I just had several different tests run in August of 2005 and my bladder/kidneys/urethra is virtually the same as it always has been.
I also leak when my bladder gets full. I find for me it is easier to pee every two hours or so and I have been doing this since my accident. With Enablex I can hold it long enough to get to a bathroom. I do have off days and have just experienced about 4-5 days of not being in control of my urine as usual. Usually this only happens when I have a stomach bug or get really constipated/dehydrated. After a few days though, I go back to my normal schedule with no problems. When my bladder gets so full. I will pee so I am not really understanding how this could harm my kidneys.....Sometimes it will happen even when it is not full. (not with the enablex though) I had the test where they look at the kidneys and residual and mine are functioning like a normal persons according to my urologist.

I was injured in 1991 and I used to strain and pee about 6 or 7 times a day. But after sometime I got infections regularly and was advised to take a scan to find out the amount of urine which is retained. And according to it even though I strained my bladder is not evacuvated completely and a residual amount is left in the bladder. So I was told to use a self intermittent cathter everytime I pee. Now I use it about 5 times a day and have had no problem upto now.
