Dreams, Plans, and Desires That Were Cut Short
Throughout life, we perpetually have or are making plans of what we want to do in the future. Many times, things happen to make us change these plans either temporarily or for good. Understandably, having paralysis introduced into your life or the life of a loved one is one of those times.
As well as you can remember, what are a few of the plans you had prior to paralysis becoming an integral part of your life that you put off or changed? Plans for the next week, next month, even the next year are what this question is asking. ![]() For myself, in my junior year of high school the drama department put on a "review of Broadway," where we did various scenes from a number of musicals. Being musicals, there are a lot of different dances to accompany the music. Being drama kids, most of us knew next-to-nothing about dance. Ironic? Yeah, but anyway... our teacher hired a dance teacher to come in the afternoons after school and teach us how to dance for the songs we were doing. Making a long story short, I had a blast! In college I was going to take some stage dance classes as electives if possible or enroll in some jazz dance classes outside of school. It was that much fun. Another thing I wanted to do was join a kick-boxing class for fun and see how far I made it. I had always been extremely flexible so I figured [through watching way too many Jean Claude Van Damme films as a kid] that it would be fun. Those are just two of the "little" things I have temporarily missed out on and look forward to doing one day. Would anyone else like to share? I knew you would, so don't be shy! ![]() -Steven |

Sorry dude, I only dream of the future now, a nice home, starting a family, a successful business, restoration of my Packard. Hey, those are the same dreams I had before my SCI.
It took awhile but my dreams are all becoming a reality now. Noel |

Well I had planned on seeing the downstairs and upstairs of my new home still do. I had planned on taking my three year old son icefishing this winter wont happen but mostly had planned on teaching my three year old son the finer things in life like how to throw a curve ball or a perfect spiral pass , bait a fishing hook just to name a few. I know in my heart that I will still do these things maybe not this year or next but I will

Noel,
I'm glad your dreams are becoming a reality now. I too dream of the future. The question was asked just out of curiosity, not to get people depressed. I believe we all -- at some point in time -- think of what we would have done. I thought it would be interesting to flesh out more of each individual's personality and likes. Good luck with fulfilling your dreams! -Steven |

I was going to graduate college, move to a different state, and start a job as a programmer. The love of my life was moving with me - we were planning to start a family together and live happily ever after. A month before graduation and the big move SCI changed my life...

I had many dreams for Heather before she was injured. Now, I look to the future and yes, my dreams have changed some but I am still hoping she becomes a successful person in what ever she plans to do. One dream that has changed is that I know she won't be the great runner that we know she could have been. But according to her she runs in a different way now.

I really didnt have many dreams or asperations pre-SCI, I was pretty content with what I did so far...good job, nice place to live, already did most everything I ever wanted to do. One thing that I was really into was motorcycle racing, or at least a big fan of it. I planned on taking a few track schools and doing a bunch more track days in the future. Too bad that my love of that sport is what got me into the wonderful world of SCI and not being able to further my interest in it. Ironic in a way...

At the time of my SCI I was in college going for a degree in mass communications. I was also an artist and musician, played regularly in a band, and fully expecting to go into something artistic or music related after I graduated.
My only dreams and desires have ever been to be able to create a work of art that would last forever, to play my music for myself and others who appreciate it, and to live a life bounded only by the limits of my own creativity. Unfortunately, I guess they will never be more than dreams to me now.
