Washington VA SCI
My Son took a road trip out to Washington and thinking about relocating out there. He is 16 mons post injury. Just wondering what thoughts are on that SCI unit within the VA system.
Thanks dmom |

Washington state or DC? Washington states VA is in the Seattle area. Some of our members use the Seattle area VA SCI unit and maybe they will chime in here.

Sorry, Washington State. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he took a 1600 mile road trip by himself. Much less that the move out there piece of it.

We have a number of members who get their care at the Seattle (Puget Sound) VAMC SCI Center. It has the advantage of being the home VA SCI Center for the Chief Consultant for SCI care in the VA, Margaret Hammond, MD. She is essentially the chief physician of all the SCI physician's in the VA system. I know her and a number of the other physicians and nurses there and can vouch for their compassion, expertise, and professionalism.
I am moving this to the Doctors & Clinics forum as it is not really a new injury issue. (KLD) |

Hey, i'm not VA related but the fact we have soo little snow is a great plus. HOWEVER, we do have RAIN most of the year, if yah can get thru that you got it made. (The old addage, you don't have to shovel rain). From what I've seen and heard of the VA it's very progressive, but others will chime in.

I did my rehab at Seattle VA in 1990 and have been going there exclusively ever since. Very personable atmosphere on the Ward, great group of staff. Dr. Hammond was my rehab doctor, and tops in my book. Of course they have issues, but what VA doesn't. Compared to what I've heard and read over the years about other VAs, it's a dream. People move from back east, just to go to that VA.
I don't like the rain, something you just have to get used to. Hard to beat the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest; fishing and hunting, mountains and forests, the ocean, no end to it all. I always dreamed of going to the Olympic National Forest. I saw your thread about him needing a chair. Whether or not he is service-connected, he should be eligible for the chair and other services provided. All the best, thank him for his service. |

Thanks Quadvet....for the recgognition for his service.
The request for the wheel chair, we were looking for a used one that would be used by the gentleman assisting with training his service dog. He is service connected and has been treated very well by the VA's that he has used so far. He rehabbed at the La Jolla VA awesome place and then has been following up here at home. His decsion to move out to Washington came pretty quickly. Hes looking for a place to live now. Like he says hes a "grown ass man" chair or not. But like I always tell him "Don't care how grown ass you are. Still my baby." So I continue to check things out when I can. Hes was going to head up to the VA and do a meet and greet see about getting himself and information transferred. Thanks for the replies. |
