Options few for stem cell foes
By Leslie Reed and Michael O'Connor
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITERS

The light could stay green for University of Nebraska researchers to pursue expanded embryonic stem cell research at least through the 2012 elections.

Representatives of Nebraska Right to Life and other anti-abortion groups say their best chance of stopping the research appears to be electing supportive candidates to the Legislature and the NU Board of Regents.

But this year's elections offer little opportunity to significantly alter the makeup of either entity.

The NU Medical Center announced Friday that scientists are moving ahead with research on a newly obtained embryonic stem cell line. The push comes a year after President Barack Obama lifted federal restrictions on such work.

Over the past year, opponents of embryonic stem cell research have tried to block the medical center from moving forward with new lines. They say the university doesn't need to use stem cells from destroyed human embryos to be on the cutting edge of stem cell research.

Ox, I've refernced the burgermeisters many times. The whole stem cell controversy will pass as will the dildoes that profess to be men of God. The ball is rolling and it will roll over those who advocate arcahic postions with no substance.

Yes, it's the nature of things. The natural evolution of the things always helps, it gets rid of lame arguments and archaic positions, but we know how slow that is.
The interference of religion and retarded thinking (to me, both are the same thing) has been taking over progress since the beginning of the time. It already happened with Galileo and lots of others. And it will keep happening until we manage to shake off this plague.
That is why I love and admire Richard Dawkins
