Good question! Wait for someone medically trained to answer you ... but I'm going to toss my answer into the ring.
I say no. Because ... dermal circulation (tiny micro-capillaries in the skin) are still compromised in paralysis ... so if the blood has trouble getting there in the first place, the red blood cells filled with oxygen in the blood aren't going to get there either ... unless it's saturated as in hyperbaric oxygen therapy. I anticipate an answer from someone who's smart!

Definitely not the smart person re: anatomy and biology from whom she's anticipating an answer, but I do agree with Lynnifer that it won't help. I have slightly different reasoning for my answer, though:
Most people are able to achieve 100 percent oxygen saturation of their blood just by breathing normal room air. Since you can't exceed 100 percent saturation, using oxygen from a tank for a few hours a day won't do anything. ~Crossing my fingers that the anticipated answer from someone who's smart doesn't make my answer look really, really dumb~

Hi,
I agree that extra oxygen will not help the healing. And giving oxygen when one's oxygen saturation is normal can be dangerous in that oversaturating can cause the respiratory feedback system to shut down one's own normal respiratory drive and cause CO2 retention- so please do not ever increase oxygen without the guidance of a clinician. Keeping pressure off, the appropirate treatment for the specific wound, good nutrition, regular turning and avoiding excess weight is the best way to heal. AAD |
