    Princess Cruises New Rule

    Starting in Feb 2008, Princess Cruises has implemented a new rule that creates a major barrier to those with significant and serious mobility disabilities.

    They now will no longer allow you to take either wheelchairs (manual or power) or scooters onto the tenders, and are also insisting that in order to get on/off the ship at any ports or on ships that don't have a ramp directly to the pier that you transfer from your own chair to their manual chair to be lifted off the ship (via a stair climber that attaches to the chair) and then back into your own chair. They will not use the stair climber on your own chair.

    For those who find being lifted manually (they don't use a mechanical lift) to be painful, uncomfortable, unsafe or humiliating (this is done in full view of the other passengers), I would recommend that you consider writing to Princess as well as to advocacy organizations such as the PVA and United Spinal Association, as well as to magazines such as PN and NM.

    In the absence of the long-awaited cruise ship ADA regulations from the Access Board, we cannot appeal this to any of the ADA enforcement agencies, but a letter to your Congressperson asking them to pressure the Access Board to get this done, with this as an example of why they are needed would also be a good idea.

    I plan to do so, and we will not plan another Princess cruise unless they change this policy, even though we are Platinum Members. We were actually looking into the Diamond Princess for this next winter, but now are looking at HAL and Celebrity instead.

    I think just the opposite should be done. It seems like they're hoping we do boycott their services, thereby making it easier for them to do business without having to deal our "issues." I say we swamp them and demand to board the tenders, or not move out of the way.

    Damn that. I'm not wasting my time trying to convince them they need my money. There are too many other cruise lines that welcome the disabled. Now, if ALL cruise lines were planning this then I'd jump on board.

    KLD .. I am going to take the opposite side for argument sake.

    Transferring onto a tender is a dangerous activity. In actuality it is being done in the middle of the harbour in who knows what kind of weather. What if they dropped me?

    If one flies to a cruise (who doesn't fly there?) then a chair user must transfer, be transfred to an aisle chair just to get onto the plane and then to get off.

    I have transfered for years in front of whole plane loads of people. Just opening the discussion a little. Not supporting the cruise line just adding an issue for consideration.
