Thread: Wait or Buy?

    Wait or Buy?

I see there's a 30% off coupon available until next week on Dell Inspiron laptops. I priced the following for about $1500.

    Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache)
    Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
    4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
    250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-Card

Unfortunately, 800Mhz RAM isn't available and neither is a 7200 RPM hard drive. Because of the 30% off, I was thinking about pulling the trigger. The other option would be to wait until May. I'm not good at waiting.

Be careful with glossy screens, they can glare pretty bad in well lit rooms. Remember that Vista is also a memory hog. It doesn't sound bad, but what would be the advantage of waiting until May?

Thats not bad for a 45nm laptop. I just spec'ed out a Thinkpad equivalent for someone and that thing was $1800 with a lesser CPU (3mb cache).

While the HDD is not 7200, platter density might compensate for the speed difference. Or check the website again to see if 7200 rpm drives are available to order on that particular day. Also, you might save even more by going to 2 or 3 MB RAM considering Dell's overpriced RAM. Especially if that version of Vista is not 64bit, 32bit will only address ~3 MB, and even then 3 MB RAM has dubious benefit in comparison to 2 MB.

But 30% off is a top-range % off coupon, so if you like it, I'd say go for it. I'd be surprised if they would be making those available in the spring/summer looking back historically.

It was only $50 to go from 3GB of RAM to 4.

I'm using a code I got from the gotApex site Andy showed me last year about this time (thanks for that ans the SP1 tip a few weeks ago).

I didn't like the glossy screens until a few weeks ago. I run a triple display using a MatroxDualHead2Go with 2 19" widescreen monitors. The latest monitor I got is glossy, while the laptop's display and older 19" monitor are not.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Congrats on the new laptop! Certainly looks like it was worth the wait. It seems odd that you would go from 6 MB of L2 cache down to 4 MB of L2 cache.

I don't think thats a laptop he bought there, I didn't think they made the 8800gts for laptops but I could be wrong.

He also said 2x200gb harddrives and laptops usually don't have 2 harddrives hah

I'm thinking desktop too - amazing if that much STUFF can be crammed into a laptop, although he did say it was a '17 which must be pretty big! I just got a Latitude D531 15.4" and when I got it I was struck by its width - its surely the widest 15.4 inches I ever saw!
