Recently, Antigua & Barbuda celebrated one of its greatest accomplishments, with the attainment of its 25th year of political Independence.

Throughout the years, the nation has seen the rise of many of its citizens in education, politics among a host of other fields.

Currently, there is a young Antiguan who is making waves in the international medical world.

Jan-Eric Ahlfors, is a past student of the St. Joseph's Academy (SJA).

As his father, Rolf Ahlfors relates, it was clear to see that Jan-Eric was destined for great things even during his youth.

A young man who knew his own capabilities and who knew what he wanted to accomplish, Ahlfors used an early disappointment in life to his own advantage.

While a student at SJA, Ahlfors wanted to sit more than the required eight subjects for the regional Caribbean Examiniation Council (CXC) assessments.

Unfortunately, according to the senior Ahlfors, the school made the decision that they could not accomodate his son with that work-load.

It was then that Jan-Eric decided that he would realise his dreams, one way or another.

He refused to go back to school and resolutely made the decision to leave Antigua's 365 shores behind and journeyed to America to further his studies where, in his mind, he would be able to focus on the subjects that he wanted to, without any limitations.

Although, it was an easy decision for him academically, as far as the friendships he had forged during his years at SJA the parting was quite difficult.

As his father relates quite a few of his classmates shed more than a few tears when he Jan-Eric left because of the friendly easy-going person his son is and the easy friendships he had formed over the years.

The move had to be made, however, and Jan-Eric left the institution a few months shy of graduation.

He was quite fortunate to gain entrance into one of America's top schools, Choates Rosemary Hall.

An outstanding student, it wasn't long before Jan-Eric proved his mettle to his educators.

He then moved on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

A lucky move for him as he could decide what subjects he wanted to take.

Because of his educational prowess, he skipped a few grades, while there.

A little bit of a rebel (with good cause though!), Jan-Eric found a way to take more subjects than his educators thought humanly possible.

He kept that under wraps for a while. Eventually, his lecturers found out. But Jan-Eric was not to be dissuaded. After doing interview sessions with the Board of the school, in the end Jan-Eric won out and he was allowed to carry the subject load he had then.

His record breaking, streak began there. He became the first student at the institution to complete 130 classes.

This young Antiguan citizen continued his learning ways, and if one were to take a peek at his résumé, he would be amazed at the educational achievements this 29-year-old to his name.

He is currently the holder of a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Physics, a Master of Business Administration in Management of Technology, Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy in Regenerative Medicine.

And if you thought he's finished with his education, think again.

He's currently pursuing additional studies in the hopes of advancing himself even further.

Jan-Eric, at age 29, has done many things in his young life and has accomplished many things, but perhaps his greatest is founding and then becoming the CEO of Total ReCord Inc.

A scientist by profession, instead of working in obscurity in a laboratory for someone else he has opted to work on his own with specialised medical technology.

He has committed a lot of his focus on regenerative medicine.

He has been making waves in his field and currently is on the cusp of a medical breakthrough that could really shake up the medical world.

Although Jan-Eric doesn't want to go through too much detail with what they are actually doing at his lab, it would be safe to say that experiments are being carried out which focusses on regeneration products for the nervous system.

The research is currently in the experimental stage in the lab and from all indications things are progressing smoothly.

And no less can be expected, for as CEO of Total ReCord Inc., Jan-Eric has managed to get a highly professional and talented team to work with him.

One of the major names on his team is Dr. John McDonald, who had worked with Christopher Reeves of Superman fame as his chief neurosurgeon.

He is also working with Dr. Joy Cavagnaro, a former director and spokesperson of the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA).

Although many may perceive scientists as recluses slaving away in their laboratories, Jan-Eric does find time to do a bit of socialising.

He was invited and attended the inauguration of George W. Bush as President of the United States and Richard B. Cheney as Vice President of the United States of America.

He was also a guest at the President's Dinner which was held to honour President Bush last year.

He was also invited to serve as Honorary Chairman of the House of Majority Trust at the 2005 President's Dinner.

Jan-Eric has been given numerous accolades for the advancements he has made in the medical world.

He was awarded 2004 Businessman of the Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee's Business Advisory Council and he was also awarded a Commission of Accomplishment by the Presidential Roundtable Commission.

This Antiguan citizen has become well-known in the biotech industry and from the numerous citations is a highly regarded scientist who is set perhaps to unveil one of the greatest discoveries in the medical world.
I am not your rolling wheels
    I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
    I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
    I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night, the night..

Sounds like he's well connected. Hopefully he can persuade those in positions of influence to support the passage of the CDRPA Bill.
