Restorative Therapies Announces FDA Clearance of Functional Electrical Stimulation FES Arm Cycling

Restorative Therapies, Inc., advances its new era in treatment for neurological injury and paralysis as this FDA clearance marks the world's first commercial release of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for Arm Cycling.

In the treatment of neurological damage, FES is used to evoke physical activity and exercise not otherwise possible for individuals with a neurological impairment. This latest RT300 capability delivers electrical currents to stimulate nerves which activate arm muscles including the biceps, triceps, supraspinatus, anterior and posterior deltoids and the muscles of the forearm. This enables a patient's paralyzed or weak arms to move through patterned physical activity utilizing their own muscles.

"FES Arm Cycling is a true world first. Physical Therapists and now Occupational Therapists are able to provide the RT300's activity based therapy not only to impaired legs but also to impaired arms." says John McDonald, MD, PhD, founder of Restorative Therapies, Inc., lead Neurologist to the Late Christopher Reeve, and director of the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore.

"Often after a stroke, only one side of the body is impaired; after a spinal cord injury commonly both sides are involved. FES Arm Cycling can be used to stimulate muscle groups in just one impaired arm or in both, customized to the needs of the individual." McDonald concludes.

Restorative Therapies submitted to Blue Shield of California a pre-approval request for a RT-300 bike for my son. I just got a letter from Blue Shield denying the claim because they said that the RT-300 was experimental. I don't understand how Blue Shield can call something that's FDA approved. Restorative Therapies is filing a grievance to try and get the denial reversed.

Does anyone have a good letter that they submitted to the insurance company that got a RT-300 approved. When I call Blue Shield and talk to their representatives they say that any equipment is covered if l I have a doctor's script and a letter of medical necessity. It's annoying to be told something by the representatives and then get a denial in the mail. I've been through this before and I know it's possible to get things approved if you follow all of the rules and get a powerful letter written and submitted to the Blue Shield grievance coordinator.

Roger, I believe RTI Therapies will help you pursue coverage. Here is a link from their site. Good Luck!

Yes, RTI is filing a grievance but they're not optomistic because Blue Shield of California has not covered the RT-300 in the past.

    Roger,
Don't give up, their first answer and maybe third is to always deny anything they can. I am constantly struggling with the claims appeal process with Blue Cross of CA. Get more than one specialists declaration of the importance of what you are filing for coverage on, and don't give up, that is unfortunately what they are always expecting. It's a bureaucratic nightmare, and that's they way they want it. It keeps the money in their pockets.

    Best of luck
