Great fitness/recovery center for spinal cord in bay area

    Hello everyone,
I know that this is a new injury thread, but i really wanted to share my experience with new injuries because i know when i was first injured i was looking for as much information as i could find. i was injured on 4/27/06 and it has been a long road of information gathering. I recently attened a rehabilitaion program at sci-fit in northern california. There direct site is http://www.sci-fit.org/. I always wanted to attend a place liek this but was always hesitant. Well, i finally got over the hump and started going. The center is really great becasue unlike traditional therapy they make you work your whole body. They have been working with me to improve my strengths as well as my weaknesses. The staff is funny and caring. Before i started this program i was doing traditional exercises and therapy, but i have to say this place has given me new insight and improvments even a year and a half later. If you are a new spinal cord injury and are looking for more information and new things to try like i was keep checking this site. there are always new posts with great information and friendly support here. have a great day. This is one of a number of post-acute outpatient rehabilitaton programs. It would not be a replacement for an inpatient acute rehabilitation program for someone who is newly injured, but could be considered (along with programs such as Project Walk, etc.) AFTER the initial acute rehab program is completed.

Please investigate all such programs carefully before deciding on this course. Most are not covered by insurance, can be quite expensive, and may not actually provide the improvement that they claim for all participants.

    Dear SCI Nurse,
SCI-FIT does not propose to be a replacement for an inpatient acute rehab program. In fact, we encourage all of our clients to either finish their acute PT programs, or continue with their PT's post acute (in addition to our program) if their insurance provides that option for them. We recognize that acute PT and OT programs provide a valuable service to our clients and we do not want anyone to miss the opportunity to benefit from the things that these PT's and OT's provide.
SCI-FIT does provide a continuum for exercise-based therapy after the clients no longer have access to PT (either because of limited insurance, or limited experience with post-acute SCI).

I hope that clears it up-
    Sincerely,
    Bianca

Rehabilitation is so much more than just PT. In a comprehensive rehabilitation program, either inpatient or outpatient, acute or post-acute, the services of all interdisciplinary team members are essential to the program's success. This includes the services of a SCI-specialty physiatrist, rehabilitation registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, vocational rehabilitation specialists, recreation therapy specialists, chaplains, psychologists and social workers, as well as other team members as needed such as speech pathologists, orthotists and driving specialists. They address all of the persons functional, medical, psychological, financial, spiritual and community reintegration needs.

If you are only getting physical therapy, you are missing out on and not addressing your comprehensive needs.

This forum is for those newly injured. The information about post-acute programs really should be posted on the exercise forum, and this message probably should have been moved there some time ago. Those interested in post-acute programs can read their advertisements on that forum very easily.
