    this pretty much sums up the situation, not just regarding stem cell research funding but sci research as well. this is why its naive to believe that investors will automatically line up to fund sci research on nothing more than a couple of positive outcomes in animal models. it just doesn't happen that way.

    Venture capitalists say that they are very interested in stem cells but not enough to start funding stem cell companies. Right now, the business case for investment isn’t there. “Great science doesn’t equal great business,” points out Gregory A. Bonfiglio, managing director at Proteus Venture Partners.

    patents

    I think the funding issue has as much to do with patents and lack of them or protections of them. Venture capitalists are profit driven so they are probably waiting to see how the patent issue will work out before getting to vested financially in stem cell companies.
