Thread: a cure ?when and by who?

  1. #161
As I get closer to the 5th anniversary of my accident and the first times I heard "there will be a cure in 5 years" I reflect upon what I have seen, researchers desperate to get the slightest improvement just to try and keep their funding going and themselves continuing on with whatever theory they've come up with. Companies desperate to have something positive to boost their stock and attract investment, charlatans pedalling "cures" in various countries with dubious regulations trying to take the savings of those desperate for a cure. The most common theme is "recovery" seems to be on those less than a year into injury and usually paras. A negative perspective maybe but all I see is a drive to get funds however long the research takes and irrespective of the potential benefits. Throw in that whatever new cure there was is superseded by the next big thing and it is difficult to see any realistic chance of any hope especially for high level quads like myself where just to be able to use my hands/arms a tiny bit would be a major advancement.

You are right. After 6 years asa quad learning to use what I have is the goal.

    Hi,
Maybe they are not in the same level as "cures" but don't forget that
some of the novel rehab procedures can improve life of their participants!

    Remember Brazilian Trial:
    https://www.nature.com/articles/srep30383

Does anyone knows if this successful trial
    - Brain controled robotic suite with Virtual reality
finished in 2014, actually transferred into any kind of therapy, anywhere?

If someone knows more about Sao Paulo clinic where above
trial is done (A. Santos Dumont Institute, Sao Paulo, Brazil)
and if there is some commercial Rehab program
available there, please share this information?

BTW, did anyone ever try to combine Gait supported
walking training (+ FES / Parastep when needed) with
Virtual Reality for INCOMPLETE SCI injuries?

You can email Dr Miguel Nicolelis on nicoleli@neuro.duke.edu and ask him?

There are a few groups and companies toying with some of the individual components (eg immersive VR, NMES, EMG biofeedback, robotic gait) of what Nicolelis does but I don't think anyone is offering the entire protocol.

Has anyone ever tried getting a quad/tetra into a spandex outfit? I do wonder what goes on in researchers heads sometimes when it comes to practical delivery.

Yes, Lynnifer I will be participant in that trial.
I am also trying to find damn Parastep close by and no luck so far.
I was participating in trial week of Sci-Step Clinic in Mason Ohio with this FES walking wonder but that clinic went into bankruptcy soon.
That Parastep system with Body weight support worked fantastic for me but can not find it close by.
see on my Blog - link below.
