Thread: Speed or torque?

    Speed or torque?

I'm going to order a Permobil C500 and am undecided about choosing the Speed package or not. It goes 7.5 miles per hour with speed pkg, only 5mph without. The dealer tried to convince me that the speed pkg was not necessary, but 5 mph doesn't seem very fast.
    Any thoughts?

3 mph is the average walking speed. How often do you need or want to move faster than most people walk?

Yha, torques better as it'll keep you going up hills, and over curb cuts.

Permobil has had some users who have had difficulty maneuvering C500's with the S package because the speed comes at the expense of torque. In powerchair-speak, torque is the amount of time required to access full power. As a result, my Permobil reps told me that some users find themselves initially struggling to get their C500S over a threshold or to turn on a high friction surface, only to have to deal with the powerchair suddenly moving faster once it overcomes the initial resistance.
