Thread: How to gain weight.

    Question How to gain weight.

    My boyfriend lost 30lbs while in the hospital, He only weighs 130 and is 6'1. He eats A LOT. A lot of people tell him, oh it's better to be thin, it's less weight to drag around, but in my opinion, this doesn't seem healthy. What's you're opinion.

    I've lost a lot of weight too, I figure it's better than having the opposite problem!

    If your boyfriend is a recent injury, it's normal to loose your appetite and loose weight. The first few months after my accident I was "skin and bones" too. As time went by I got my appetite and my weight back; now I have trouble keeping it off. I wouldn't worry quite yet. Wait another year and see what happens.

    One of the best ways to put on weight is protein, lots and lots of high-protein foods. I went into rehab last year, and in four months I put on 30 pounds. And that was because I was eating protein, three times a day. Lots of beef, chicken, protein shakes (I use boost drinks). That's what they gave me in the rehab. But he has to eat at least three to four times a day. The whey protein powder is good because you can put it in anything.

    Thank you. He has a huge appetite. He just can't seem to put the weight back on? I guess we will just see, just wnated to see if it was normal. thank you.

    Does he have pressure ulcers? That can make you loose a lot of protein from your body, and it is hard to take in enough to make up for that.

    Otherwise, if you take in more calories than you burn, you should gain weight. Unfortunately if most of his weight loss initially was muscle mass (due to inadaquate intake and atrophy) he is unlikely to put back on muscle below his level of injury. He is much more likely to put on more fat around his abdomen (and rarely in his butt). Being on the lean side is actually better for him, as long as his skin is doing OK.

    He has not had a pressure sore yet, but he does have something that looks to be a bruise, and he has had this for awile, we keep a close on eye it. There are two bruises on his hips. He thinks they are there because he hits his chair when he transfers, or something. He did have bruise on his tailbone that went away.

    Bruises can be a type of closed pressure ulcer called a deep tissue injury. They can open up and become deep serious pressure ulcers very quickly. He needs to stay off those bruised areas completely, be more careful with his transfers, and see his physiatrist or a wound specialist to have these areas evaluated.

    HIGH PROTEIN MEAL REPLACEMENTS. I hade a staff infection early this year. i lost 30. im 6'2 normally 195. i have put it back on. my quad belly is even smaller so its good weight. i drink 2 sans infusion mrp's daily. that 400 calories each. and an extra 100 grams of clean protein. very important for all sci's. i also workout 6 days a week and have a crazy active life thou. and i disagree w/ nurse i put alot back on my ass and legs. im inc w/ spasms and i stand. im taking in 3k calories roughly per day.

    staph, not staff.

    Your injury is pretty incomplete as I remember. Those with complete injuries are rarely going to get back any muscle mass below their injury if they loose it from either weight loss or atrophy.
