That is a very good and important question, but I don't know the answer

I've actually said this to a few doctors:

"Look, I've known my body for 46 years, and you've known it for about 46 weeks/minutes/whatever. Who do you really think is in a better position to know what's going on and how to help resolve it?"

It's shocked a few of them enough to slow down long enough to start listening.

Give it a try -- it may not feel as good as slapping the shit out of them, but it won't get you arrested for assault and battery, either.
It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.

I actually said something simular to a doctor once - was escorted out of his office & told never to come back - like I would! They're not trained to 'hear' - and there's a difference between 'listening' and 'hearing'.

    Patient compliance, or non-compliance, maybe?

And don't forget about a need to complain about wheelchair breakdowns. Mine did again today on a “walk” a mile from home. Luckily I had my cell. It seems it’s always on a weekend. Plus my insurance makes me use a place I hate. They carry no parts in stock. I first need an appointment to get a check-up to see what’s wrong (even if I know it’s a flat tire, etc), then I need to get a prescription from my doctor, then they need to get the insurance to OK it, then they order the parts, then after they get the parts I need to make an appointment to get it finely fixed. Part of it is the insurance needing to OK everything first. But come on, carry some common parts. AND… they will not fix anything even if I will pay. They say having a contract with the insurance company keeps them from being able to let anyone on that insurance pay privately. Come on, common courtesy would be to carry some common parts (tires, batteries, etc). In an emergency just fix it. If my insurance wont cover it, I will. 2 months for my last repair. Luckily I have a backup, but it needs batteries. But will the repair shop switch my chairs batteries into the back-up chair while I wait for a repair… NO!
