I EDITED THE ORIGINAL POST, BUT WANTED TO ADD ANOTHER REPLY TO THIS THREAD AS WELL TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. SORRY IT WAS NOT CLEAR. NEW INFORMATION IN BLUE

Dustin is the boy's name. He is a senior at Northrup High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was at South Padre Island, Texas on spring break when the accident occurred. They took him to Valley Baptist in Harlingen. My wife, daughter, and myself were in Florida on spring break as well. Our daughter, Katie, is also a senior at Northrup High School. Both were in the final steps of their senior year, focused on prom, graduation, etc.

Thank you for everyone's help and support

The additional information helps quite a bit. Maybe folks from IN and the surrounding areas can give you suggestions. I would look to transport him to a model SCI facility that has the ability to do surgery as well. I am assuming they did not know he had a SCI when he was sent to a level 3 trauma center.

Transfer him. What he gets as a result of going to the best will last a lifetime.

If he doesn't transfer, you may never know what could have been.

Does he have a halo on or have they stabilized his spine?
He needs to go to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center(TMC) on Fannin in Houston (Dr. Malik is a spine speciaist, Dr. Valadka is a trauma specialist, along with Volmer, Yeh, & others or one of the other neurosurgeons-Valadka) or Methodist Hospital, also on Fannin in Houston- Dr. Blacklock or Richard Harper.
Hermann has helicopters but I am not sure how far they fly. It is atleast a 7-8 hour drive via ambulance. Then after the necesary surgeries are finished, he can go to TIRR. TIRR, at 1333 Moursund in Houston in the Texas Medical Center is a hospital, it has outpatient centers throughout Texas also. I think Dan Graves is the contact person there-main phone # 7137995000. TIRR is part of the Memorial-Hermann Heathcare System now. TIRR can wean him off the ventilator if he isn't off. Dr. LaTorre and another -can't think of his name -are seeing the inpatients.
I have worked at a 3 hospitals. Baylor in Dallas is good also (but I have never worked there.)

He does not have a halo. He has a stiff metal collar. They performed an anterior surgery to help stablize, and are planning a posterior at the end of the week.

    Question

Does anyone know about Chicago Shriners?? What is the quality for the second posterior surgery and rehab?

LauraD's daughter Heather has gone to Chicago Shriners.

Heather did outpatient rehab at Shriner's and does yearly checkups which we are past due for. I also know another SCI girl, Jackie, that did her rehab there after her release from UW hospital in Madison WI. Not only did Heather love it there, but I loved what they did with her and how they treated her. I know Jackie was happy with her treatment there too. Pediatric SCI is one of their specialties. Dr. Vogel is awesome!!! Hopefully we will be going back down there again this summer. I will try to give you a call tomorrow morning. Late night tonight. The first ball game for my son. I just might be home all day if we get the snow they are calling for. Just maybe school will be cancelled!!!!
