Depending on funds, but one tip could be to get for example a Sharp AQUOS LCD TV (link), an LC42XD1E or bigger. Thus hook-up points will be the same as a computer monitor (LCD) connections (HIDMI), and also nowadays LDS’s for regular TV usage like this next generation LCD’s are also much better than Plasma TV’s. This in turn if you have helping aids for your regular PC will be direct compatible hooked-on to such TV monitors.

I am not a programmer, but what they need is a program that can combine learning capabilities with the USB remote, that will allow it to store them learn codes in the XML file and automatically assign itto the desired key. Like an all-in-one program that works with eventhost and maybe Hal2000 for voice control also. But it's nice to be able to use the Web browser as a remote also.

You can do that with EventGhost. No programming needed. It can learn ir codes from any ir remote. You then just select the code and execute the command. I just found it easier for me to have an on-screen remote to just click on.

I'm attaching a screen capture of my EventGhost. You add a macro for each button on the remote. For each macro you add an action (transmit ir for example). To use it you just select the macro on the list then press F5 to execute it.

You can combine macros like I did with the "Science Chan" macro. That shows an on-screen display saying "Change to Science Channel". Then it sends "272" to the cable receiver to change the channel. I added 1 second delay between sending each digit.

Sorry for the late reply, I don't think you will see any limitations with the new version. The older one only works with serial ports so I could not use it with my laptop or some of the newer machines which didn't have the port. The newer version with the USB should take care of that. At the time I purchased, probably four years ago, it didn't have a lot remote codes built in and it takes some time to program if you needed to learn each key for lots of different devices. Once it's set up, it's very easy to use and works well. Good luck.
