    Lamisil on toenails?

I've got a fungus on my toenails - turning them brown and hard. My doctor recommended that I not take pills because they may be bad on the liver. Instead she prescribed lamisil. When I got home and read the instructions they say not to use it on nails. Checked at Wal-Mart today and all of their medicines said they were ineffective on fungus on nails. Anyway, is it safe to use lamisil and will it help or is there another medication that works better? Thanks.

Try Vicks VapoRub. Seriously - I read that in the paper once. A web search for "Vicks" and "fungus" may bring up articles.

They say it's true about the Vick's. I haven't had much luck w/ it on my 1 funky toe, but it's worth a shot. I've also used everything else. I don't want to take pills for 1 toenail.

My mom has been using the Vick's VapoRub Cream on a couple of her toenails that nothing else has worked on & it has had a great affect on it. She tried the regular Vick's VapoRub and it didn't work as well as the cream. Hope this helps you out...

Lamisil tablets are used for fungal infections of the nails. Lamisil does not come in a cream, so I am confused in how you are supposed to apply these tablets if not taken orally.

There are topical treatments for nail fungus that are prescription, and others including the home-remedy of Vick's and tea tree oil, although they often are ineffective. Here is some additional information about toenail fungus treatment options:

My husband had very bad fungus on all his toes. I had 5 toes with fungus. He took the lamisil tablets for 3 months every day at the same time, as directed. Around the time he stopped taking the med. his nails were finally growing out like normal. I started taking lamisil after that and had the same effect. Now we are fungus free!

    lamisil OTC cream

Mike is probably talking about this, KLD. It's OTC, not prescription. Even though it said not to put it on the nails, I did for a little while, and it didn't hurt, but I don't know what it might do long term. It didn't help either.

Like you Betheny, I have one problem toe. My doctor says it's not fungus, but I know he's wrong. I know what fungus looks like. So, rather than go to a specialist for one toe, I'm going to try the Vicks approach.

Thanks X, that's exactly what the VA sent me (they fill prescriptions through the mail). I think I'll try the Vicks also. I've got a call into the VA pharmacist - will see what they say also.
