    Question Newcomer with questions

My 21-yr-old son Nick is C-2 ASIA complete since 11/05.

How long until the swelling around the injury goes down?

How often, if at all, should the site be checked by MRI?

Welcome to CC tatiana--I'm sorry that you needed to find us but glad that you did. When my husband was injured in March of 2001, the doctors told us that the swelling would last for about 6 weeks, after which time there would probably be no significant changes to his functioning.

We found that it was more like a couple of years before things completely settled down, but every patient is different when it comes to sci.

I'd recommend that you have a look here

where Wise Young has posted a lot of the information families need to know.

As far as scheduling MRIs, we haven't done that unless there is a specific reason to do so, like loss of sensation or mobility. That may be a function of the health care system in the USA, where insurance companies typically would not pay for that kind of expensive test without a strong reason--but I think that once the vertebrae are stabilized, there's no reason to keep checking for new damage.

I hope that's helpful; please let us know how we can help.

    Dear Kate,
Thanks for answering. I'll go to Dr Young's site.
