TRENTON — Calling it a "tremendous" day for New Jersey, Gov. Corzine signed legislation Wednesday to borrow $270 million for stem cell research facilities, a step celebrated by lawmakers, advocates and scientists who hope it will lead to finding cures for diseases.

"Your work right now has given us the work to do," said Dr. Wise Young, a neuroscientist who is establishing a stem cell institute at Rutgers University. "We now have to deliver."

Added Senate President Richard J. Codey, D-Essex: "Today, we make history, tomorrow we discover a cure."

Critics say the research should be limited to adult stem cells, which have yielded cures to some ailments. The ethical debate has centered on use of embryonic stem cells, which some fear will result in more abortions. But advocates say scientists can ethically study embryonic stem cells as offering promise for curing ailments such as diabetes, Alzheimer's and spinal cord injuries.

"We are investing, not spending, in the economic future of New Jersey," said Tricia Riccio of the New Jersey Citizens' Coalition for Cures. Her son was paralyzed four years ago during a wrestling match.

"But more importantly . . . we're investing in millions of people throughout the world who suffer along with their family members from debilitating diseases," she added.

Her son, Carl Riccio, 20, of Warren Township, called it one step. "The final goal is cures," he said.

I don't think this amount of money could have been put to better use. I just hope the wing-nuts don't come out and sue the state over ESC like they did here in Cali. All it does is waste time and tax dollar money.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ New Jersey's stem cell research institute will be named for Christopher Reeve, a New Jersey native who promoted stem cell research after he was paralyzed in a 1995 horse riding accident.

    Great!!!!!!!

New Jersey is alot closer than China, I can be there in a few hours, hopefuly something good will come of this fairly quickly there's so much research already out of the country. Maybe we could lead the world for a cure, at least some partial one.

"Today, we make history, tomorrow we discover a cure."

BRAVO. Now that's how an American politian should think and talk. BRAVO again.

This is the first quotable quote I have heard in a long, long time.
