    Chronic Pain

    Hey all,

    I'm a T-6 ASIA B 3 years post. I have chronic pain in my back. When I got out of rehab I was raring to go on with my life. I went skiing, got a handcycle, and did all kinds of things. Over the years my back has had more and more pain in it. Since my injury, it always felt tired but now I go to work and after spending the day in agony hopped up on painkillers I go home and spend the rest of my time laying down. It’s not much of a life. I don't know what to do. I had my rods and screws removed. I'm seeing a pain management specialist as well as a PT and chiropractor. It seems like the muscles in my back are super tight and spasiming. Everything I've done so far has been temporary. Has anyone else run into this? If so, does anyone have any suggestions?

    I think you are on the right track with an ongoing program with the pain specialist, therapist and optionally a chiropracter. My experience is that the more you move and keep exercised and toned, it improves your physical and mental health. I imagine it to be very hard to keep going day in and day out with constant pain. Relaxation techniques also help.
    I'd also consider a pain or sCI support group if available. It's amazing what can come out of programs like that.

    There are no support groups like that in my area. So far pain management just gives me better drugs but no real fixes. My neurosurgeon said he can straighten my spine out (I have a pretty sharp bend in it from my accident) but he is skeptical that will do any good. My PT and chiropractor think the pain is coming from the muscles being stretched over that sharp bend. I'm not sure how long I can continue to work like this. I can't really exercise becuse of the pain. The only thing that helps is laying down. I'ts not a very good quality of life.

    I am a C-5 complete quadriplegic and completely understand what you guys are talking about. I get up in the morning go to work (take medications while I am at work, just to get through work), and then come home and am eager to get straight in bed. Getting in bed typically feels good at first, but then even laying in the bed brings a set of pain in itself. I am unable to move myself and have to lay in the same position. My scapula's that were feeling pain from sitting in a wheelchair are hitting the same spot in the bed and it feels like to sharp pains on both sides of my back. Almost like someone is stabbing me. To make things worse this pain totally messes up my sleeping patterns or should I say lack of sleeping patterns. I'm typically unable to get a good night sleep. I sleep for an hour or two at a time usually. My left side is stronger than my right side so I have developed scoliosis pretty severely even while trying to prevent it by trying what feels like every backrest in creation. It is super frustrating as you guys know and at times I feel like just giving up (I mean the pain really is that severe and frustrating), but I feel like just like the SCI nurse said the more I move and do things even if it is painful, the better off I am mentally and emotionally. If I just sit and think about my pain and how unfortunate I am, then I just get all kinds of negative feelings. What really frustrates me is that on top of all the pain I get re-current UTIs from a super pubic catheter. Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating! Definitely can't say that enough, but what real option do we have. If we are earnestly seeking out all the medical attention and other possible ways that quote unquote help manage pain and we still struggle it can get pretty discouraging to say the least.

    geeez....... thanks for letting me complain a little bit. No one ever seems to understand, so in a way it is encouraging to hear that other individuals can relate (not that I wish any pain on anyone else).

    Laying down hasn't helped my pain in years. All laying down does is reduce the popping of my shoulder blades, so I spend a lot of time laying down for that reason.
