Nominate Your Thoughts on Major Events in SCI

I have been asked to do a timeline of the major events in spinal cord injury in the past twenty years. Would be very interested in gathering as many suggestions as possible. You can define 'events' any way you want ... scientific advances, of course, but also your other ideas of things that have shaped our field. Thank you for your help!

    Holding on to Hope,

    Patricia

The creation of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis (I can hear everyone's groans by the way! ) It was established the same year that I became paralyzed and the doctors in emerge told me about it.

The life and times of Rick Hansen.

    Man in Motion world tour

He started on March 21, 1985 from Oakridge Mall in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Although public attention was low at the beginning of his trek, he soon became a worldwide media sensation as he progressed on a twenty-six month long trek that would log over 40,000 km through thirty-four countries on four continents before crossing Canada. He returned to Vancouver's BC Place Stadium in triumph to cheering crowds of thousands on May 22, 1987 after raising $26 million for spinal cord research and quality of life initiatives. Like Fox, he was hailed as a national hero. Today, the wheelchair and many other items associated with the Man in Motion world tour are preserved by the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Superman's injury, and his sad death, are to me major mileposts in this battle to win necessary funding and needed trials. and to get up and walking once again.

Also, August 15 1986 is a more personal milestone, the date of my accident...we all have one of these, again sadly.

    Patricia,

Check out this website that lists key events in the diagnosis of spinal cord injury paralysis and the search for a cure:
