Is working to walk a "service" organization? i need to write a speech!

    Hello everyone,

I'm wanting to do a motivation speech on SCI but im not sure if i'm looking at the right "service" organziation. I was thinking working to walk would be a good one but does it fall under the category?

    Individual Speech
: Each student will present a 4-6 minute Motivational Speech, which will introduce a service organization, discuss what the organization does, why your classmates should get involved, and how they can get involved. This assignment allows students to work on public speaking skills, which will be an integral part of the group presentations in this course, as well as educate their fellow classmates in ways to be involved in the community.

here's what some of the other students are doing now:
Andrew S. Carp Foundation: Leeshay Bemniam

    Humane Society: Jenn Cake
    Habitat for Humanity: Felix Herrera
    Big Brother/Big Sister: Cara Winton
    Ecoaction: Stephanie Schwartz
    2nd Mile: Kris Korte
    Toys for Tots: Liviu Degeratu
    The Red Cross: Margaret Gibbons
    Globe Med: Michael Croughn
    Meels on Wheels: Chuck Davis
    United Way: Cait McVay

Do you think this would work if i used working to walk? Thanks guys!

    Cory;

    Definitely!

Also, here is a link to advocate speeches from this year's event to give you more ideas: http://www.unite2fightparalysis.org/...2WSpeeches.htm

Most people are very uninformed about the realities of SCI. U2FP is the advocacy group and W2W is the Rally portion of their effort. It is an excellent choice.

Cory, I am not sure what the specific criteria your class has for "service" organization, or how broad it may be. Typically, a "service org" refers to one that provides a type of direct service or care, as in the other orgs you've listed. Many also have a policy/legislative/advocacy component. My immediate thought is that U2FP is more of the latter - an org that is more of a PAC since it is not involved in any direct service or care.
You should see if your instructor is not making a distinction between "direct service" and the more policy/systemic change efforts of non service related orgs. It would be great if you can use U2FP.

    Chick,

U2FP's primary mission is helping others be able to advocate for themselves with a focus on cure. Many tools are used to provide this service. This objective was the primary motivator for the educational symposium component of this years Working 2 Walk event instead of only conducting a political rally on Capitol Hill.

Thats interesting becuase my next question was, how could my fellow students get invovled. Should I focus on UTFP and then talk about Working2Walk, and stepnow.org or are these not all part of UTFP? Because if i can't get my community invovled in the helping to fight paralysis i can't use it. I was thinking of course they could send letters to congressman, attending working 2 walk events, and stepnow.org stuff? Any others?

    THanks for the help!

U2FP partnered with the Christopher Reeve Foundation to produce Working 2 Walk. Stepnow.org is a different organization-their efforts are very worthy.

From a U2FP perspective, your fellow students can join our efforts in many different ways--first, go the www.u2fp.org and subscribe to our newsletter. This will provide updates on latest projects, volunteer opportunities, etc. Other ways--yes, attending events like Working 2 Walk (and/or volunteering to help), sending letters to congressman, plus various other activities on a local, state, federal, and/or international level. Ideas can be found at
www.u2fp.org. Our latest project is "Bridges 2 Hope", a significant expansion of the "Wall of Hope" concept, the result of which first was unveiled at the Working 2 Walk Symposium.
