    Paraplegic Dirtbiking

    New Lift Now

By Dan Arritt, Times Staff Writer
    September 9, 2006

Ricky James, paralyzed at 16 in an amateur competition, is back on his bike, riding, even if the thought of it makes his parents squirm.

The temperature seemed to rise by the minute at the dusty Lake Elsinore motocross park. Ricky James launched his motorcycle, looked toward a group of spectators while in mid-flight, and motioned with his left thumb and pinky finger.

He veered off the dirt track, rolling past his mother, Tina, who watched nervously.

"Did you see that, Mom?" he shouted.

James, who turned 18 on Aug. 24, isn't the first teenager to scare the daylights out of his mother while riding a dirt bike, but he might have been the first paraplegic to do it.

Awesome stuff, good for him. Sounds like a blast

Wouldn't recommend it to everybody, but I'd give it a try, for sure..

I met Ernesto Fonseca a couple of months ago at Craig during his rehab. I'm sure he'd be excited to know about this story.

    Thanks for posting this.

    Very cool.

I'd love to get back on my bike.

I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Nice handle livelikeyouweredying. It's the only way to live, for sure.

What kind of bike did you ride?

    I had 4 dirt bikes when I got injured, a suzki 400, honda 250, honda cr 125, and a kawasaki 175.

The most fun was the little honda 125, man, it was small, but I swear that thing was flying in the air half the time I rode it. I used it for jumps, too.

The suzuki 400 almost killed me a few times. Funny, I must have ate it 1000 times riding my bikes, and never got seriously hurt. More like strange than funny.

Haha. I had a yamaha ttr-125 and a suzuki dr 200. I loved my 125! It was faster than the 200. Haha. Yeah, same. I thought for sure I'd get seriously hurt on the bike, but, nope. Silly car. lol.

    Oh, and thank you.
