I got it like a year post on my lower back and though I don't have sensation there I could feel and it hurt like a mofo when my parents would change my dressing. It didn't last long and it's in connection with having the chicken pox. I thought I had it bad having it on my lower back...my grandpa got it on his face around his eye!

    Dude, that sucks. Sorry.

    FYI on the contagiousness issue...

"People who have had chickenpox cannot "catch" shingles from someone who has it. However, people who've never had chickenpox can be infected with chickenpox if exposed to someone with an active case of shingles. The rash sheds the varicella-zoster virus and can be contagious. A caregiver or other person who lacks immunity developed from a prior case of chickenpox or the vaccine must avoid coming into contact with the rash or contaminated materials."

Sorry - one more thing. I also found this:

"Also at risk for shingles are people with leukemia, lymphoma, or Hodgkin's disease, and those whose immune systems have been weakened because they are HIV-positive, or have undergone chemotherapy, radiation, transplant surgery with immunosuppression, or treatment with corticosteroids. Moreover, about 5 percent of people with shingles are found to have an underlying cancer, about twice the number of people in the population expected to have undiagnosed cancer."

I hate to think of the fuss this may unnecessarily cause, but were you, by chance, given methylprednisolone after your injury?

Thanks, bro. I have no clue what I was given after the injury. I was in a coma so I'm sure there are countless numbers of things I received that I don't know about. If they gave me something to aid in the process of giving me shingles I'm sure they had a good reason for giving that drug to me. But shingles ^*%($^@ SUCKS. I got some medicine today for it though. It's called Acyclovir(800mg) and I take it 4 times a day for 7 days. Anyone know about this drug? Also, can I get shingles again after this?

Acyclovir is an antiviral med used to suppress virus replication.

    Shingles can return:
"Risk for Recurrence of Shingles. Shingles can recur, but the risk is low (about 1% to 5% chance). There is some evidence that a first zoster episode boosts the immune system to ward off another attack."

    Derek,

You can request an itemized hospital bill, which should list EVERY pill, etc, that you took while in coma...

At least all of the itemized ones I ever saw did...for when I had gall bladder surgery, etc...

That's how I found out that I was being charged for an ER visit when I had my kidney stone, and I did NOT even go to the ER...my Doctor sent me from his office...I came through admitting...LOL...I saved some $$$ there...

    Take care and feel better!

First off, you are a smart guy

Secondly, DAMNIT!!!!! I don't want this again . It'll hurt for a while then it'll itch and then it'll burn and then start the cycle over again. It's pissing me off. I thought you had to be older to get shingles. I laughed at my doctor when he told me I had shingles. Then he's like, "I'm serious, Derek, it's shingles" and then I was like
