    prolonged fever - high esr?

I have been on bed rest for a pressure sore on my butt, which has just healed completely. Over the last 12 days, I have been having fever. Initially, I thought it was an uti, and when fever did not come down after 2 days of flushing with 12 l output, I went on Norflox antibiotic. However, subsequent urine c &s showed that the urine was sterile.
Although the fever has come down from a high of around 104, over the last 4 days it has been fluctuating between 99 and 102. A second blood test revealed a high ESR number of 125 - which the Dr indicated is non-specific but indicates infection. Tomorrow, I will be going through a chest x-ray?
Is there anything specific with SCI and high ESR that I should be aware of?
    Thanks - Atu

How deep was your pressure ulcer? How long did you have it?

My first thoughts are that you likely have either an abcess that has closed over the top inside your pressure ulcer, or have developed osteomyelitis in the bone in that area. Both need to be completely investigated. Do you have a SCI physician?

Ultrasound or CT scan of the area will usually reveal an abcess, while a bone scan may be needed for diagnosis of osteomyelitis. If this reveals nothing, ask for an infectious disease specialist consultation.
