CHICAGO, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) has been ranked the #1 Rehabilitation Hospital in America by U.S. News & World Report for the 13th consecutive year. The Institute's continued top ranking represents its commitment to providing superior patient care and rehabilitation programs that give patients their best hope of returning to fulfilling lives. RIC addresses every aspect of rehabilitation -- from helping people regain the skills of daily life, to vocational training that enables a return to work, to fitness programs that promote physical well-being. RIC's dedication to helping people with disabilities achieve the best life possible has made it a trusted organization that attracts patients and healthcare professionals from around the world.

While best known for treating the most complex cases such as brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke, RIC brings the same level of expertise to helping those with more common conditions including arthritis, chronic pain and sports injuries.

The Institute conducts the largest rehabilitation research effort in the world, with more than 250 projects underway. Research teams are involved in breakthrough studies with the Lokomat, a robot that may help people with paralysis walk again; brain mapping, to determine how the brain activity changes after strokes; and creating a "cyborg" that connects animal brain cells and a robot in the quest for more functional artificial limbs.

"We are very proud to be again ranked the best [rehabilitation hospital] in the nation," said Wayne M. Lerner, DPH, president and CEO of RIC. "The consistency of our #1 ranking is a testament to the quality and breadth of the services we provide."

Advances in medical care have resulted in more people surviving injury and living longer with various types of physical impairments. As population demographics and lifestyles evolve, it is likely that all of us, at one time or another, will need rehabilitation of some kind. Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a specialty which utilizes various treatments for people with all types of disabilities, helping them stay active and productive.

"We have some of the finest experts in the nation," said Dr. Elliot Roth, senior vice president of medical affairs and medical director at RIC. "And because of the significant impact we've had on the lives of people with disabilities, helping them get back to work and life, we're able to extend our reach beyond the Chicago area to the rest of the nation, and indeed, all over the world."

To be considered for the rankings in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" issue, institutions must either be a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals, be affiliated with a medical school, or offer at least nine of the 17 specialties surveyed. The rankings are determined by a survey of board-certified specialists in each category, who are asked to identify those hospitals that are the leaders in their specialty without regard to location or cost.

The Institute has more than 20 sites of care throughout the Chicago area and in southern Illinois. RIC is the home of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and operates one of the largest and most sought after physiatry residency programs in the United States.

Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is dedicated to helping people with all levels and types of physical disabilities regain or improve their physical functions and empowers them to participate more fully in family, social, vocational and leisure time pursuits.
