    Question Topamax

My Pain management Dr. has just perscribed this in a very low dose...25mg once a day.
I am wondering if anyone has any input as to the side effect and results of taking this for nerve ending pain.
I tried Lyrica first however that made my hands swell, I was very confused and I was hungry all the time!!!!!
    Thanks

    Hello Lookwho-
I have posted numerous times on my experience with Topamax. I've had WONDERFUL results with pain relief. I am on 100mg 2x/day with a 3rd as needed. The only side effect that I have noticed, is weight loss. Whereas this has been GREAT for me, I know that some people it's not so good. I had gained close to 40 lbs being on Neurontin and I've lost all of that and then some since being on Topamax. I also have very little appetite these days, but I never had a huge appetite before, so I don't know for sure that it's related. As with any other anti-seizure med(Topamax and Neurontin are both Anti-convulsants used "off label" for neuropathic pain), be aware that you CAN NOT safely just stop taking Topamax. You need to work with your dr and taper down. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, I'll answer as best I can.

No, I don't get the confusion or complacency that I had when I was on the Neurontin. When I was on Neurontin, I really had a clouded head. That is gone with the Topamax.

I've been on Topamax for well over 6 months now...It took me about a month to do the full transition from Neurontin to Topamax.

You are listed a a Jr Member b/c you just recently joined and have posted under a certain number of posts(I don't know what number that is though, I think maybe 100)

I started topamax back in march. I slowly ramped up to 100mg at bedtime. When I was taking it during the day it made me tired and I had a very small appetite, which led to weight loss. I also had stomach cramps which I thought was constipation.

I still had neuro pain, so I went to 125 in hopes of reaching 200mg. This actually increased my pain. I started to have pain in my hamstrings and hands to the point where I couldn't sleep. I didn't think it was the topamax until I did a search and found a few sites showing side effects.

After discussing this with my doctor, I stopped topamax. I was able to immediately stop it because my dose was <200mg. The new pain went away, I sleep better at night and I'm much more alert during the day. I didn't realize how doped up it made me feel. The stomach cramps subsided and my appetite came back as well. I still have neuro pain, so I have to see a pain specialist and possibly try neurontin.

This was my experience with topamax. My doctor has other patients that've had success with topamax. It works for some and it doesn't for others. I hope it works for you because neuro pain sucks.

    Topamax is great!

True, all meds are individual specific in impact and side effects. Given that truism, I must say that topamax (25mg 3X daily) has made my otherwise unbearable paresthesia easily tolerable. Yes, I've lost weight and food is boring. But given that fat cells can be chemical pain triggers, I'm not whining. As a C5/C6 SCI onetime quad (10 yrs ago) who now drives and (wobble)walks, topamax truly has had a positive impact. ~charlie hedbring
