Autistic team manager drops in 20 points

Jason McElwain had done everything he was asked to do for the Greece (N.Y.) Athena High School basketball team — keep stats, run the clock, hand out water bottles.

At 5 feet 6 and considered too short to make the junior varsity, he opted to be the manager — anything to stay close to the sport he loved. He continued the role with the varsity as a senior.
Then in the team’s final home game of the year, they asked him to do something he had never done before — score points.

McElwain, who is autistic and usually sits on the end of the bench in a white shirt and black tie, suited up for the game. With his team way ahead, he was put in.

In the next 4 minutes, he poured in 20 points as the crowd went wild. He made six-of-10 three-point shots and barely missed another when his foot was on the line. He was carried off the court on his teammates’ shoulders.

“It was as touching as any moment I have ever had in sports,” his coach, Jim Johnson, said of the youngster who never missed a practice.

McElwain didn’t begin speaking until he was 5. He lacked social skills but things got easier as he got older. And he found basketball.

He airballed his first shot and then missed a layup.

“The thing about Jason is he isn’t afraid of anything,” his father, David, said. “He doesn’t care what people think about him. He is his own person.”

They showed that on our local news here in VA, I almost cried, he was so excited. And the team was so cool with him.

This is such a great feel-good story. It's been all over the news as it should be.

Mr. Soul, I thought of you when I first saw this story as I know you deal with autism. I'm glad you posted this.
