    what is your opinions??

I was wondering if anyone knows anyone who has had gastric bypass surgury after suffering from a spinal cord injury. I wasn't sure if there are greater risks for someone who is disabled over someone who is able.

i wouldn't know for sure but i'd think that it would be because of the significant change in the amount of food consumed afterwards. i think maybe that it would possibly harm your health for that reason.

being a low level para, you have ab muscle control so that's good. I can't find any information online about paras having gastric bypass.

One of the SCI nurses will be online tomorrow to answer this for you, I'm sure!

    Hi Alissa,

MY GI contacts report there is no reason why a SCI patient could not undergo gastric bypass surgery. There is no greater risk than for AB folks as the digestive system remains basically intact.

The difference would be in the post-operative stage and would require the special SCI considerations as undergoing any major surgery (such as prevention of pressure sores, immobility, etc).
