People can say the stupidest stuff somtimes...

So today I was going to class, and some guy says, "Hey hows that thing in the snow" So i go, well its alright, i havn't had any problem so far with these tires but if I need, I have a set of thicker treads if I need them. He says, Oh i had a friend who was in a powerchair, it was awesome. I would love to have one of those. I need one, I'm lazy enough. I wanted to smack the taste out of his mouth and then proceed to urinate on him. But I just laughed and said, yeah. Then got the f out of there.

I see nothing wrong in what he said. Perhaps you're just sensitive about the issue. At least he had the decency to strike up a quick conversation with you. Didn't say anything rude or nothing in my opinion.

Yeah, they do say some stupid things and sometimes it's a friend who says them. I think people just don't THINK sometime. A very good friend of our's made this comment when I told her about some yard work we were doing a few years ago. Well, I was using a push mower, I can walk. And my relative with SCI was doing a damn good balancing act in his manual chair while using one of those walk behind weed eater/trimmer things. Except, of course, he wasn't walking behind it. He'd cut as far as he could, stop, move up, cut more, move up....and so on. This was also on a slight incline that was very uneven and grown up with weeds, so I was really impressed with him. I was bragging on our work to our friend and she said, "Well, I need to get one of those things because if HE can use it, I KNOW it's something that a person can SIT DOWN to use!" Well, yeah, he sits down to use it, but having to SIT and use it, AND push a wheelchair, makes it 100% HARDER to use! Ugh!

Another time we were at the hospital. He's pushing his chair, I'm walking beside him, and a woman pushing a large metal cart comes along by us. She looks at his chair and says--"THAT's what I need!" Um? So you can push the cart AND the chair??

I don't think most people mean to sound so insensitive. It's just that many people have no common sense, or tact.

I agree with kkmay at least he wasn't afraid to talk to you. Unlike other people stare at you and think you're retarded. That stuff doesn't bother me b/c people don't know how much of a nightmare this injury is.
