    upset stomach

My son is a C4-5 quad and gets an occassional upset stomach. Any thoughts on causes or treatments?

    Dr. J J,

Gallbladder problems are frequent in people with cervical spinal cord injury. This is a problem that is probably associated with altered sympathetic activity and sludging of bile in the gallbladder. Some studies suggest that over 50% of people with spinal cord injury will develop gallstones some time in the course of their post-injury lives. If your son has not had a check up of this upper gut, it may be worthwhile considering getting some tests done to make sure that his stomach, gall bladder, and liver is normal. But, if it is infrequent and depends on the food or stress, then maybe you can wait to see if it gets worse or changes in pattern before you get these tests done.

    Wise.

More info please! It could be something as simple as too much bad pizza (which we're all sensitive to!), or the combination of his meds and when he takes them. Or could it be an emotional cause? Do you notice there's a particular time of day - before or after meals - before or after meds?

Did he have a trach? Does he have trouble getting mucous up out of his chest? Sometimes my son gets a sort of gag reflex when he's trying to clear mucous, and he feels like he's going to throw up for a couple of minutes.

His upsets are infrequent and last about 1/2 day or less. He is taking no medications. If they persist, we may get his gallblader checked.
