Search Function on CareCure VbBulletin software

The vBulletin software contains several powerful search functions:

    Simple Search
The simple search function is on the main drop-down menu under {Search}. Enter one or more keywords, without commas. This will do a search of posts that contain all the keywords. The search is not case sensitive.
    • AND options. If you enter multiple words (without commas), it will find posts that contain both words. For example, if you do a search for "olfactory", you will find over 500 threads/posts. If you do a search for "amyotrophic", you will find 337 threads/posts. If you do "olfactory amyotrophic" or "amyotrophic olfactory", you will find 24 threads/posts. If you do "olfactory, amyotrophic" (i.e. with a comma separating the words), you will find no threads/posts. If you do "olfactory and amyotrophic", you will find 24 threads/posts.
    • OR option. Enter one or more keywords separated by "OR" and this will find posts that contain any one of the keywords. If you do "olfactory or amyotrophic" you will find over 500 posts.
    • NOT option. Enter two keywords separated by "NOT" and this will find posts that have the first and exclude all posts that have the second word. For example, if you do "Olfactory not Huang", it will return all posts that contain the word Olfactory but excludes those posts that have Huang.
    • * option. This is the wildcard option. Enter in "*" or asterisk for portions of the keyword that can be variable. For example, if you do a search for "neurotrophic", you will find 319 threads/posts. If you do a search for "*urotrophic", you will find over 326 threads/posts. If you do a search for "*trophic", you will find over 500 threads/posts.

Search Relevance Sorting. The search function uses a number of criteria to sort the search results. At the present, the search uses the following scoring system for relevance, adding to the score by the following criteria. Threads and posts that have multiple occurrences of the search words get higher scores. More recent posts get higher scores. Likewise, threads or posts that have search words in the titles get higher scores. Finally, threads that are viewed more times or rated higher also get higher scores.
    • Multiple occurrence of the search words. Every time the search finds another word from the query, it will add 15 points to the relevance index.
    • Date. The newest item in the result set will receive an additional score of 15 and the oldest item in the result set will receive a score of 0.
    • Thread Title. An additional score of 5 is added if a search word appears in the thread title.
    • Post Title. An additional score of 5 is added if a search word appears in the post title.
    • Thread score. The number of posts is multiplied by 0.10 to get the thread score.
    • View score. The number of views is multiplied by 0.01 to get the view score.
    • Ratings score. The average rating of the thread is multipled by 0.5 to get the rating score.

    Advanced Search
This option allows you to search for keywords with restrictions of other variables such as username, forums, dates, whether posts or threads are displayed, and the display order.
keywords. This works just like the simple search. Enter one or more keywords. For example, if you do a search for "olfactory" without specifying any other variable in the advanced search panel, you will find over 500 threads/posts.
username. This restricts the search to posts or threads made by a specific member. If you cannot remember the exact username, you can just enter a few letters of the username. For example, if you search for "olfactory" keyword with "wise" in the username with the Exact name box unchecked, you will find 417 posts that could have been made by craywise1, wiserone, wittyandwise, wisey, or wise young.
replies. If you specify threads that have the keyword "olfactory" by wise young, and have at least 2 posts, it will find 303 posts/threads.
dates. You can specify posts made within a year, month, weeks, or your last visit. For example, if you specify "olfactory" by "wise young" threads with at least 2 replies, "a week ago" and "and Newer", you will find only 2 threads/posts.
sort order. You can sort by relevancy score, title, name, etc.
forums. You can specify the forums.

Search Index now includes 3-letter words. Previously, the search function could only find words that have more than 3 letters, not allowing you to search for acrynyms such as OEG, SCI, etc. Now, you can search for 3-letter words. For example, a quick search for "OEG" will now return over 500 posts while "OEG SCI" will return 378 posts. Because there are many 3-letter words, this change results in slower search times but it is still relatively quick. For example, a search for "OEG SCI" took 3.36 seconds. However, a trade of several seconds in order to do more complete searches is worthwhile. Wise.
