    Posting Tips

Quick Reply. There is a box for Quick Replay at the bottom of thread display lists. To activate Quick Reply, you need to press one of two buttons on the bottom right of each post, to answer that specific post. This makes it so that your answer is associated with the particular post as a subpost. For people who are using the threaded view or hybrid view, this allows people to see the posts and their relationship to each other.

Quoted Replies. If you press the button indicating a quick reply with quotes, it will add the text of the post to your post, bracketed by the quote commands. You should edit the text to eliminate extraneous text rather than repeat everything in the post that you are answering. Note that the quote command is in square brackets and there must be a corresponding "/quote" command in square brackets to end the quote. You can use "quote=authorname" form where you have the name of the author of the quote in the place of authorname.

Hybrid Thread Display. If you use the hybrid mode of displaying the thread, your quick reply will be placed next to the post that you are replying to. In contrast, the linear mode will display all the posts chronologically. This is my own favorite way of viewing the threads because it shows the relationship of the posts to each other, particularly when there are many posts in a thread, answering different posts. It is a very powerful approach to organize posts. However, after posting many times for several days, I find that the linear mode with the posts in reverse chronological order (newest first) is still the most efficient way to view the posts. It takes only one click to see the latest post. Unfortunately, it does not show the original topic but it takes only a second click (hybrid mode) to show the topic.

Full reply screen. This should add your post to the bottom of the thread with a link to the original topic. Please note that the window will show a box for "Additional Options" and that you can shrink this box down by pressing the circular button with the double up arrows. The additional options include attachments, notification, rating. Underneath the "Additional Options" box, the posts are shown in reverse chronological order so that you can see the posts that you are responding to.

Attachments. You can attach a variety of files to your post. At the present, I think that the limit on the file size is 2 Mbytes (or at least it should be). If there is a need, we may increase this limit but the size limit is to discourage people from posting very large files to the site. We will probably set more liberal limits on file sizes in the Members Only forum. Please note that if you attach a picture file (such as jpg, gif, etc.) and the site recognizes the file, it will display the picture rather than a file to be downloaded. Also, we have set the site to display only one attachment. If you have multiple attachments, it will not show multiple full-size pictures. For this reason, it is important that you do not attach high resolution picture files. In the CareCure Home Page, we have provided a way for you to reduce the size of picture files so that they will display properly on this site.

Images. If you want to show multiple images in a post, the best way to do this is to use the IMG command. With the commands between square brackets, you should have IMG, the URL address of the image (which should be a jpg or gif format) followed by /IMG. At the present, the number of such images is limited to 10. We may change this up or down, depending on usage. When you use an img command, it copies the image from other web site. Please indicate the source of the image, if at all possible.

Time Limits. There are several time limits to posting:
    • Edit post without edit message. You have two minutes in which to edit what you have posted without any message indicating that the post has been edited. After that, a message will be inserted indicating that the post has been edited. You can indicate the reason why, etc.
    • Editing of post. You have 10,000 minutes in which to edit your post. Note that each day has 1440 minutes and therefore this is equivalent to about a week. After this time limit, only moderators can change the post.
    • Minimum time between posts. There is a 30 second period after you make a post during which you may not post. This is to avoid people from abusing the site by flooding it with many repeated posts.

Other features. This site has several sophisticated features that were not available in the previous Infopop-hosted carecure site. For example,
    • Automatic shortening of Long URL addresses. if you post a URL address that is too long, the site will automatically convert the address to a shorter name with the middle part of the address substituted for by "...". Long URL addresses use to distort the posting page.
    • Conversion of all caps text. Typing in all capital letters is regarded to be "shouting" on the internet. This site will converted all caps text. If the post has text in all capital letters (all-caps), the site will convert the text to lower case with uppercase associated with the beginning of sentences.
    • Limit to post sizes. For the time being we are limiting posts to 25,000 characters. There are also limits to the quote text lengths. This is to discourage people from posting huge blocks of text.
    • WYSIWYG toolbar. You can enable this feature so that you can see directly the appearance of what you type. Please be aware that if you do this, it may slow down your browser performance.
    • Minimum characters per post. We have it set so that a post must have at least 5 characters before it is accepted by the site. This is to prevent posting of empty posts. Note that the character count does not include characters that are inside quote commands. In other words, you can't just have a block of quoted text without at least 5 characters.
    • Adding a poll to a thread. You can add a poll to a thread at any time. Note that adding a poll is a two step process. You first post a message, turn on the option for the poll in the box just below the text entry box, submit the post, and then enter the poll options. The poll is shown on top of the topic and people can vote or view the poll results. Note that each person can vote only once. I turned on an option that allows people to change their poll votes, even after they have voted. So, those people who have voted before will still find the option to vote on a poll. However, they should know that they are not adding more votes but simply changing their old vote.

Copyright rules. Please remember that we must observe copyright rules which state that you must not reproduce entire copyrighted works, must identify the source and author of the work, and should not make it appear as if you authored the material that you are copying from elsewhere. In other words:
    • Only post excerpts (parts) of web or other copyrighted articles.
    • Always identify the author and source, including the URL address.
    • Place the material that you are copying in quotes if at all possible, to identify what you are copying and what you yourself have written.

    Private Messaging Options and Tips

This site provides a new level of private messaging to members. After having used it for about a week, here are some thoughts about the options and tips on using private messages on the site. In the following text, I use curly brackets {} to indicate menu options:

    Turning on Private Messages
    Turn on your private message by going to {User CP} > {Edit Option} > Messaging & Notification > Private Messaging >
{Enable Private Messaging}. This allows other people to send private messages to you. If you have this option turned off, people will not be able to send private messages to you.
{Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up} will pop up a window indicating the presence of a new private message if and when you are logged onto the site. This works for me.
{Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages} will send you an email message indicating the private message. This is sort of like an email service where you don't have to give out your email address to people.

    Sending a Private Message
You can send a private font to any member who has private messaging turned on by clicking on their username in a post or going to the {Members List} in the menu bar and selecting their username. This will open a window containing their profile. The right panel will show "Contact Info" with the options that has been selected by the member.
Email. There may be a box with a link {Send a message via email to ... }. If the person has selected the option to allow people to email him or her, this will open up another window that will allow you to type in an message that will be sent to that person's email address. Please note that if you send an email to that person, your own email address will become available to the person. However, if the person has specified that he or she does not wish to receive emails, you will see a vBulletin Message saying: "Sorry! That user has specified that they do not wish to receive emails. If you still wish to send an email to this user, please contact the administrator and they may be able to help."
Private Message. If the person has selected the option to allow people to send hime or her a private message, this will open up a window that allows you to type in the text of a message to send. Note that you can put up to 5 people at a time. Simply enter the names of the others people in the Recipient username box, separating them by ';'. Send the message by pressing button {Submit Message}. You have the options of {Save a copy of this message in your Sent Items Folder}, {Automatically parse links in text}, and {Disable smilies in text}. If the person has selected the option of having popup notification of private messages, the private message will show up on the screen of the person if he or she is online, or when the person logs in. This occurs almost immediately.

    Receipt of Private Messages
Requesting receipt. When you send a private message, there will be a popup window that asks whether you want to get notification of receipt of the private message by the person. If you indicate that you want notification, the person that received the message will have a popup window asking if he or she wants to acknowledge receipt of the private message.
Receiving receipt. If the member acknowledges receipt, the private message that you sent will be listed as having been read in the list of "Confirmed Private Message Receipts" that you can see if you go to {User CP} {Track Messages}.

    Viewing Private messages
You can view your private messages by going to your {User CP} and selecting one of four options:
List Messages. This opens up your Private Message Inbox where you can see a list of the messages organized by day and time of sending. Icons indicate whether the message has been answered or not.
Send Messages. This opens up the "Send New Private Message" page where you can send up to a private message to up to five users.
Track Messages. This shows all the messages that you have sent, organized by those that have confirmed receipts and those that have not been confirmed.
Edit Folders. You have two standard folders called "Inbox" and "Sent items" for private messages. You can create up to 3 additional folders.

    Deleting and Moving Messages
In the {List Messages} window, you can select messages and carry out an action on, choose the action in the pull-down menu at the bottom right, and press the go button.
Deleting Messages. You have a limit of 50 messages. You will need to delete messages in order to receive more when you reach that limit.
Moving Messages. This allows you to move messages into custom folders.
Mark Read or Unread. This allows to mark the messages, which changes the icons.
Download Messages. You can download the messages in several different formats.

In summary, private messages gives you the ability to communicate with other members without having to reveal your email address. It is different from the Private Topics in the previous CareCure site hosted by Infopop in that it is limited to five users and not organized as topics but more like email.

    Thread Displays

You are three options for displaying messages (posts) in any thread (topic).

Linear This simply lists the messages in either chronological (oldest first and newest last) or reverse chronological (newest first and oldest last) order. After having used this forum for several weeks now, I prefer the reverse chronological linear mode. This is because you see the latest post on top as soon as you open up the thread. In long threads that have dozens or even hundreds of posts, you require multiple mouse clicks in any other mode.

Threaded This shows links to all the messages, showing the relationship of each message to previous messages in a "tree" format. This method requires that you click the link before you the message. When there are more posts than can be shown on the window, you have use the mouse to scroll down to the bottom of the tree before you see the latest message. Please note that messages that are Quick-Replies to specific messages are attached to those messages and therefore you don't necessarily see the latest post at the bottom of the tree.

Hybrid. This shows the "tree" of messages, as well as a list of the messages in either chronological or reverse chronological order below. This gives you both the threaded and linear approach in one screen. Again, messages that are in answer to specific messages will be placed adjacent to those messages and the bottom message in the thread is not necessarily the latest message.

Number of messages to display. You can choose the number of messages that you want to display on a page, i.e. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. Since most threads have less than 50 messages, if you choose 50 threads, you would be able to see all the posts on a givn thread in one page. It takes longer to load but this still takes less time and effort to view the posts than having to click to multiple pages.

    View First Unread

If you are in the linear display mode, there is an link on the top right side of each thread display called "View First Unread". If you click that link, it will move your display to show the first unread post in the thread. This option is the fastest and best way of moving quickly to the posts that you have not read and start browsing from there. This is a powerful feature that saves a large number of mouse clicks and scrolling to get to see the first unread post.

Private messages are still limited so that people cannot hold more than 50 messages at a time. As you approach that limit, you should download your messages into files that you can store on your computer. Note that there is checkbox on the top of private message list that allows you to select or unselect all the posts in the forum to download at the same time.

How do you make yourself popular enough so that somebody will send you one?

Or even reply to anything you say?

I guess that's a topic for another thread, huh?
