Your Back Pain May Literally Be A Pain In Your Butt
Sprained muscles and ligaments, arthritis, osteoporosis, and herniated discs can all cause back pain.テつ*テつ*
テつ*
Doctors have a lot of ways to treat back pain - including medications, physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, injections, and surgery.テつ*テつ*テつ*Sometimes these treatments work, sometimes they don't...andテつ*sometimes back pain is really just a pain in the butt!
テつ*
-------------
テつ*
Sandra Holden has had back pain for seven years.
テつ*
"It's like knitting needles stabbing in the back," says Holden, describing the pain.
テつ*
The pain started when she was pregnant and continued after she gave birth.テつ* It hurt right at the very bottom of her spine, a condition knownテつ* as coccydynia.
テつ*
"The part or the spine involved is the very very tip of the tailbone called the coccyx, this little bone at the bottom," says Dr. Robert Gotlin, Physiatrist.
The tailbone is supposed to line up with the pelvis.テつ* But it bends forward when you sit down on a hard surface.テつ* The same is true in pregnancy.テつ*テつ*
テつ*
In fact, Dr. Gotlin says coccydynia is the most common cause of back pain related to childbirth.テつ* So why have most people never heard of it?
テつ*
"The most common reason we don't see this often is because of misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis," says Dr. Gotlin.テつ*
テつ*
So most doctors assume it's typical back pain and prescribe treatments like anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy.テつ* Sandra had them all, but didn't have much success.テつ*
テつ*
Dr. Gotlin suggested a different kind of therapy.テつ*
The treatment for coccydynia is to put the tailbone back in the right place...so Dr. Gotlin goes through the rectum and pulls the tailbone back...relieving the pain.
It doesn't sound pleasant, but as Holden says, "Once you have been through it two or three times it's not uncomfortable at all."
テつ*
Holden also says it works.
テつ*
Dr. Gotlin ways it works in roughly 60%-80% of the patients he treats.
テつ*
The procedure takes about a minute and a half but the relief isn't always permanent.テつ*テつ*
テつ*
Some people, like Holden, have to have the tailbone put back into position every couple weeks.テつ*
