Support for London bid

London is among the contenders for the 2012 Games

The British Paralympic Association has voted unanimously to support London's bid to stage the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The British Olympic Association's proposal includes a promise to provide and sustain easy access to facilities for London's disabled community.

The bid would boost the profile of Paralympic sport... this is a fantastic opportunity

Paralympic swimming champion Marc Woods
"That's the key for us," BPA chief executive Phil Lane said.

"London is not the most accessible of cities and the Games would leave a legacy of accessible transport and facilities, not just for disabled sportsmen and women, but for people with a disability in general.

"At the moment we have to fight every inch of the way for funding on a year by year basis.

"It's a constant battle and this bid would bring investment into our sports over a longer term."

The BPA was also reassured that the Paralympic Games would be fully integrated with the Olympic Games if the bid was successful.

Many had memories of the disastrous 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games, which were organised separately from the Olympic Games.

London has until July 2003 to officially register its bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
