ELYRIA, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2002--Invacare Corporation's Team Invacare athletes Ernst Van Dyk and Edith Hunkeler swept the men's and women's wheelchair divisions of the 106th running of the Boston Marathon, held Monday, April 15.
South Africa's Van Dyk turned in his personal best time of 1:23:19, the sixth-best ever at the Boston Marathon, to finish ahead of second-place finisher Krige Schabort and third-place finisher Franz Nietlispach, also members of Team Invacare. It was Van Dyk's second Boston Marathon title, following last year's upset of four-time champ Nietlispach.
Van Dyk had trained hard with an eye on breaking the world record, which was 1:21:23, set in 1994; however, he reported following the race that he didn't get the tail wind he would have needed to do so. Still, he finished 2:45 ahead of Schabort and nearly 7 minutes before Nietlispach.
In the women's race, Switzerland's Hunkeler won her first Boston Marathon title with a time of 1:45:57, a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher. Hunkeler emerged following the 13-year domination of Australia's Louise Sauvage, also a Team Invacare athlete, and America's Jean Driscoll. The two took turns winning the title since 1989, and both have since retired.
Hunkeler lost to Sauvage last year by only four seconds, then trained with her for this year's Marathon. Hunkeler said after the race some of the secrets she learned from Sauvage paid off.
