Invacare Corporation's Team Invacare Claims Championship, Third Place in Los Angeles Marathon Wheelchair Action

ELYRIA, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 2002--Invacare Corporation's Team Invacare athlete Ernst Van Dyk ended the longest winning streak in the history of the Los Angeles Marathon by defeating the five-time defending champion to win the men's wheelchair division.

Van Dyk, of South Africa turned in a winning time of 1:28:44 in a three-way photo finish at the tape. Team Invacare's Krige Schabort, also of South Africa, was clocked in third place with a finish one second behind Van Dyk's.

Observers credit a flatter course as the edge that enabled Van Dyk to beat his opponent to the finish line. The defending champion has a strong reputation for his prowess on hills.

Van Dyk may be growing accustomed to dethroning champions. In the 2001 Boston Marathon, he overtook the five-time defending champion to win by more than a six-minute margin.

Paul Nunnari, of Australia, also a Team Invacare athlete, finished eighth in the LA Marathon's men's division, with a time of 1:35:40.

In the men's handcycling division, Team Invacare's Scott Gilger of North Olmsted, Ohio, finished third with a time of 1:29:20.
