    Kicked out of Kerry Rally

I work across the street from the University of Pennsylvania where John Kerry spoke today. I was given a VIP ticket to the event and I decided that I would go during my lunch. The crowd was mobbed and when I arrived a staff member escorted me to the wheelchair and press entrance. Once at the wheelchair entrance I was told that I would not be allowed to enter because there were not enough secret service agents to check me. The staff was allowing a multitude of press and catering..etc. staff through. I said that I had a ticket and that I would be most willing to submit to a hand search. The young staff member then began YELLING at me in front of people that the gates openend at 10:30 and that I should have shown up then if I wanted to attend. I showed him the ticket and mentioned that nowhere on the ticket did it mention that individuals using wheelchairs needed to arrive early. The man then told me that I could use the "regular" entrance if I wanted to get in. I then tried to explain to him that there was a curb that I could not get over to get into the venue, he then told me, "well, then you can't come in."

I was totally humiliated by a Kerry campaign staff member today in front of a crowd of Able Bodied people. I felt horrible. I am a young professional disabled woman who was trying to be an active participant in the political process and I was turned away...it was horrible.

Sigh...The political wheel moves on again leaving me behind.
I e-mailed and called the Kerry Campaign and I have not heard back from them. I strongly encourage all to e-mail the campaign in protest...this is unexcuseable!

That is an outrage!! Let me know where to write and I will. Drop me a line about who and where to write. I'm in a pissy mood its a good place to dump some negative energy in your behalf. Regardless of what anyone believes politically, this is an example of the system failing miserably in the face of a person with a disablility. It makes the Kerry Campaign look bad.

Jennifer, I'm so sorry this happened to you! How awful! You had every right to attend, and he had no right to speak to you that way.

I don't think this makes the Kerry Campaign look bad; I think it makes our society look bad. This could easily have happened at a Bush rally, and probably has. It happens far too often, in far too many public places, to far too many wheelchair users. The insensitivity isn't always so blatant...but it's there.

    That's just wrong!!

I guess I've been lucky to not encounter such excruciating behavior in my 8 years of using a chair.

I would like to say a little something about the Kerry campaign, but I'll save it for the political forum.

Well, there was the problem, you were missing your entourage of the minicam operator and a sound guy. You really think that any of these politicians and their organizations give a rip about the average citizen? They are only in it for the press exposure. Lets all rally around Kerry, he is so much better than Bush!
