Resource Publishes Disability Action Plan and Toolkit

To ensure that the UK's museums, archives and libraries are accessible to all disabled people, Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries has produced a Disability Action Plan and a self assessment toolkit.

The Resource Disability Action Plan: Achieving equality of opportunity for disabled people in museums, archives and libraries and the Access to museums, archives and libraries for Disabled Users toolkit will also help museums, archives and libraries comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) which makes it illegal to discriminate against disabled people in employment, service provision and access to buildings and premises.

The Resource Disability Action Plan: Achieving equality of opportunity for disabled people in museums, archives and libraries aims to support museums, archives and libraries in improving access for everyone. The Plan addresses the main issues to emerge from a recent survey that Resource conducted of services and facilities for disabled users of museums, archives and libraries and outlines actions which will be taken.

To support the work of the Action Plan Resource's self-assessment toolkit will help an individual museum, archive or library identify their strengths and weaknesses in meeting the needs of disabled users and complying with the DDA. The Portfolio can then be used to guide improvements. The toolkit can also be used to benchmark against similar organisations.

This toolkit is the first of a series which will support museums, archives and libraries to improve access to their collections and services. Two further toolkits, relating to cultural diversity and social inclusion, are currently being developed. All three toolkits will be critical in helping the sector to implement the Inspiring Learning for All framework, the new learning and access framework which sets out how museums, archives and libraries can become more accessible and inclusive in the provision of learning opportunities for users and visitors.

Both the Action Plan and the toolkit are available on the Resource website at http://www.resource.gov.uk/action/learnacc/00access.asp in the disability section.
