TOKYO - The number of traffic accidents involving electric wheelchair users more than doubled to 207 in 2001 from 89 in 1996 when the National Police Agency (NPA) started collecting data, the NPA said Thursday. The NPA said 191 people suffered injuries and 11 people died in the accidents last year.

The NPA said an educational program for electric wheelchair users is necessary to curb the number of accidents. Stores that sell electric wheelchairs explain to buyers how to use them, but the instructions given by most stores take less than one hour, according to the agency. (Kyodo News)
