Canadiens' Traverse Injured

MONTREAL (AP) - Montreal Canadiens defenseman Patrick Traverse was
immobilized and taken off the ice on a stretcher after a hit from Michael
Peca during Thursday's game against the New York Islanders.

A Canadiens spokesman said Traverse was taken to hospital with a head
injury, but was conscious and able to move his extremities. He also was
scheduled for a spinal-cord evaluation.

The injury occurred with 6:06 left in the second period when Traverse was in
the corner near the Montreal net and Peca checked him into the boards.
Traverse's head snapped back into the glass before he collapsed to the ice,
where he lay motionless for 10 minutes.

After the check, Canadiens team doctors David Mulder and Vincent Lacroix
immediately came to the player's aid and a stretcher was quickly summoned.

The two doctors spoke with Traverse, who was otherwise motionless.
Traverse's skates and lower legs were taped together and an orange neck
brace was placed around his head before he was lifted on to the stretcher.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Traverse was facing the 5-11, 190-pound Peca when he
was hit. No penalty was called on Peca.

The Molson Centre crowd applauded while Traverse was taken past the
Canadiens' bench. His teammates gathered around the stretcher and tapped it
with their sticks as Traverse was taken from the arena.

Montreal led 2-0 at the time of the injury.
