Resetting the default navigation pane width in MS Word

Does anyone know of any way in MS Word to reset the default width of the navigation pane? The current default is too big and takes up too much of my screen, cutting off my document. If I resize it manually, my text starts hopping around and it makes me – – sticking with a bit of decorum in advance of Valentines Day – – a little kerflummoxed.

Which version of Word do you use?
For 2016 you open a document, select 'Layout' -> Margins
Select Custom Margins and set the top, bottom, left and right margins to 1 inch or 2.54cm and then click 'Set As Default'
