24 inch wheels to 26 inch wheels using different tyres?

    Hi,

Can 24 inch wheels be made into 26 inch wheels using different tyres?

I was sure I had read something like this before on the forum but can't find it now. I think knobbly tyres were used. Is that correct?

    Thanks,
    Rob

The selection of tires for 24" (ETRTO 540) is pretty limited. The 25"(ETRTO 559) has by far the greatest selection of sizes available.

The rough rule of thumb I've figured for the wheelchair size wheels is the outside diameter of the full inflated standard tire on the wheel rim is

    24" (ETRTO 540) = 23 7/8"
    25" (ETRTO 559) = 24 7/8"
    26" (ETRTO 590) = 25 7/8"
    27" (ETRTO 622) = 26 7/8"

quick search of the SCHWALBE site shows the largest tire available to fit a 24" rim is 24 x 1 3/8 37-540 https://www.schwalbetires.com/node/2927

can't say what diameter you'd get with that tire on a standard 1" wheelchair rim... some experimentation required

Any and almost every discussion on tire/wheel size most likely will be very confusing at least for some.

In a manner of speaking yes, well sort of. If the 24 inch tire aka 540mm is a wider width the end result will be not only a wider tire but a larger circumference. When you say 26 inch I am assumeing that you mean the 559mm which in the MTB world is refered to as 26 but in the wheelchair world is commonly called a 25 inch(559mm) if you are talking about turning it into what the wheelchair worldcalls a 26 inch(590mm) then the answer might be no.
I am not sure how wide a tire you would need to pull that off If you mean to try and make the 24 inch(540mm) have the same circumfrence as the 26 inch(590mm).
I will qualify my yes answer by saying if you run say a 24 inch tire 24 x 1.37 aka 35-540 the circumfrence will be 1916.37 mm which would be about the same circumfrence as the 26 x 1 inch aka 25-559mm which has a a circumfrence of 1913.23mm So you always need a wider tire on the 24 inch to come close to the circumfrence of the skinner tire on the bigger wheel. Here is a link showing you the circumfrece of all the different tire widths. I do not even think you can find all these different widths listed here and the 590mm tire is not listed at all. http://www.bikecalc.com/wheel_size_math this chart would be useful for handcyclers when trying to figure out the cirumfrence to punch in on your odomenter when setting wheel size or you could always measure the circumfrence of the tire you have mounted on your wheel and convert that to MM

thanks for the info I was trying to make the 24 inch wheels like 25-590 so don't think it will work.
