    FES Bike

Does anyone use an FES bike at home? We are hoping insurance will approve for you newly quad 16 yr old son Connor. He had his accident 8/23/18 C4 complete, but has biceps, shoulders and wrists seem to be coming in. Also has trace triceps that we are hoping for. Any suggestions on starting exercising? He hates therabands so we bought wrist weights. Still very weak, but working it! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

PS- We are in Houston, Tx if there is anyone nearby!

What is his insurance? Workers' comp may pay for this, but most health insurances does not. Often there are used ones for sale on-line here and at other venues, so if you are going to private pay, you should start with a search of our "Equipment & Services" forum.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

I strongly recommend reading Sam Maddox's First 90 Days book (https://scifirst90days.com/). It has a section on exercise and talks about FES bikes. Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation also talks about FES bikes (https://www.christopherreeve.org/liv...al-stimulation).

Another good resource would be reading John McDonald's paper from 2002 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12296690). It describes the benefits gained by a C2 complete quad who participated in an activity-based therapy program that consisted of: FES cycling at home, supplemental stimulation of the arms and core, stretching, and pool therapy.

If you'd like to know more about FES bikes and how to make the most of them, ask away!
