Thread: What are the best facilities for SCI physical therapy?

What are the best facilities for SCI physical therapy?

I want to find an expert who REALLY knows the bodies, conditions, issues, functions, and capabilities of people with SCI.
I want an expert who can completely evaluate me, tell me what to stop doing, and tell me what to start doing.
I want an expert who uses the most current and advanced knowledge and technologies.
I have been quadriplegic for 31 years and am fairly healthy, but I haven?t seen a doctor or physical therapist with SCI expertise for many, many years.
    Thank you for your recommendations.

Sounds like you are looking for something like the "second look" program at Shirley Ryan Ability lab (new name of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago).

Craig in Denver offers Intensive Outpatient Evaluations - NP, PMR MD, urology, PT, OT, wheelchair clinic all do assessments and offer guidance/suggestions on going forward. I suspect most of the big SCI centers do something similar.

Having a complete profile would help others to advise you, esp. you location (country, state, etc.).

If in the USA, look for a Model Systems SCI Center, or a major rehab center that is CARF accredited as a SCSC (Spinal Cord System of Care).

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

    Thank you!
The Shirley Riley Ability Lab and Craig Hospital sound exactly like what I am looking for!
I live in California, but I don’t mind traveling to another state for the best treatment.
The closest Model Systems SCI Center to me is Rancho Los Amigos, but this facility does not sound as impressive as the other two I mentioned.
I will be visiting Texas soon and could go to TIRR Memorial while I am there.
Out of these 4 facilities, any thoughts on which is best?

Rancho has a research program on aging with SCI/D that makes them a leader in this field. I would check them out before going out of state.

Ok. Thank you. I was just judging by websites. The websites for Craig Hospital and Shirley Ryan are much more informative, but I will give Rancho a call.

I just talked to Rancho. They do not offer comprehensive evaluations. They have a pt eval that lasts 45-60 minutes. Craig Hospital has a full eval that lasts 3-4 days.

Make sure you tell Craig *everything* you want looked at so that it gets scheduled. They’ll reorganize on the fly based on the medical history etc, but if you know when you schedule that you want/need specialist consults (infectious disease, rehabilitative neurosurgery, wound care) let them know when you get on the calendar. Also, if you’re going to stay onsite, be sure that you can tell them the dme you need and what size it should be and if you’re going to need to hire a caregiver while there, get agency suggestions from them, because I don’t think all agencies are permitted to work there.
