Apt. Complex for PWDs Opens in Des Plaines, IL, USA

Just a comment. Although this looks like a really nice place, it goes totally against the concept of "mainstreaming": disabled persons living within the community, not segregated into separate housing, education, etc. I feel even elderly disabled should be able to choose live in the community.
I guess the appeal of this type of segregated housing is aimed at providing a staff of personal care attendants on call to residents that need it.

    Is this the trend now?

I also have some concerns about ghettoization of PWD, but this apt. complex is one of a number built by the OTR (Over The Rainbow) non-profit organization in Illinois. It is not assisted living (attendant care is not included) but they do have programs for residents in life-skills and nutrition (although they don't provide meals).

It is certainly better than the nursing homes which many of their low-income residents have seen as their only other option. It appears that this location only has one bedroom or studio apts. though, so not an option for families. Some of their other complexes (they have about 10 so far) apparently do have two bedrooms.

Here is the website of OTR for more information:

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.
