It sounds to be a take on the Neuroregen scaffold that was applied to chronic injuries with positive results for complete injuries. There they surgically resected scar tissues to eliminate the inhibitory effect of glial scarring on nerve regeneration.

the line: "The implantation led to a gradual restoration of the severed spinal cord, regrowth of the neurons and cells and prevention of scar tissue" is what threw me to thinking it was an acute thing

Very acute. The rats were completely transected at T-10 and then the cell embedded scaffold was inserted.

Here's the full publication in Frontiers in Neuroscience.

When it comes to a severed spinal cord injury I don?t see how chronic or acute injuries would make a difference. A glial scar cannot form where there is no longer spinal cord... although axons severity of atrophy ( according to Dr. silver, axon death according to other doctors) throughout the body is a different issue unfortunately obviously for chronic’s.

Dr. Young used to explain this, and what I’ve come to understand from other researchers when it comes to chronic spinal cord injuries no matter what the treatment it will take years of intensive functional movement/training to cause substantial functional returns. Of course, along with the perfect treatment we have not figured out the perfect methodology for “functional movement/training“ that can be conducive for resprouting axons and/or Regeneration.

A chronic injury will never receive a surgery, or take a pill get an injection, etc. And have functional return if they just hope back in their wheelchairs and continue living their life in stagnation expecting their legs to magically starts moving one morning .

Not to derail but here's an old article about Reeve and Israel:

Part of me hates discussing the old stuff because here we are still sitting and this article is 14yrs old.
